The ZD30 drives more like a car, the TD42T is a truck engine.

Towing is easier with the ZD30. ZD30 gets better fuel economy. ZD30 has more expensive pumps, injectors and computers.

The TD42T is better down low in the rev range. The TD42T has a good reputation for reliability.

The TD42T has issues the ZD30 has issues (which become more obvious with engine modifications).

Correct servicing and treated with respect and both engines are fine. Poor servicing and abused and the TD42T will outlast the ZD30.

My father has a ZD30 auto ('03) and happily tows a 21ft Jayco around the country 6 months of the year with not a problem to date at 90-100km/h.

I have a TD42T manual ('99) and it struggles to pull a 1500kg camper at 100km/h.

If I was buying a daily driven family car for holidays with the caravan, I would get a ZD30.

If I wanted to go to the very remote parts of this country, or play on the harder 4WD tracks go the TD42T (the extra power of the later intercooled versions would improve this).

Neither choice is bad, and the series IV ZD30 motors are better equipped to handle abuse than the earlier ones. Check out the GU Patrol manual on the Patrol4x4.com forum for a more technical review of the issues with the ZD30.

But put you bum in each one and choose the one you like to drive more. If you are very unlucky and get a ZD30 that goes bang, the $6k is better spent getting a car that you like fixed than never being happy with the TD42T if it wasn't your preference. They are both very different cars to drive.

or spend part of that $6k on turbo work, and be happy and have something that will last, treated well or not.. Spend the whole $6k and get 160k or more at the wheels.

what setup are u running to struggle towing a 1500kg camper? they are great at towing big weights...

tow 2t and a mate tows 3t and the 4.2 does it easy..some others had the 3lt...and bang...bang :lol:

why dont boost levels get mentioned when comparing these engines???
and also block and head materials??? put the same boost in a 4.2 as a zd30 runs....or turn a zd30 down to the same level as the 4.2 runs and see what out preforms and last...

An example is a run back from Nelson on the weekend. 90% of the trip flat on the floor in 4th to try and maintain 100Km/h. Given it is a hilly run back and I haven't done an exact comparison against the ZD30 but the ZD30 seems to pull harder when I have been in it. One day I will try the camper behind the ZD30 and see how it goes.

That said, when you get on the flat roads 5th gear does get a look in, but any sort of incline and you are back in 4th. The Patrol tows it all perfectly, it is just working at its limit once you leave the flat.

New exhaust next week and a intercooler and turbo upgrade in the new year will fix it all, but then that is no longer a fair comparison against a stock ZD30. It will also be interesting to see if the TD42T takes on a more sporty feel oppose to the truck motor it is in standard trim.

I dont know what the problem with your truck is Dirty. I have an N/A TD42 with 200,000km on it. I tow a car trailer (with a car on it) fairly often, and also tow the stock trailer full of sheep or a few calves in it several times a year and dont have any dramas. Sure its a bit slow to get up to 100km/h, but i dont have any dramas with it once its there.

One of my mates is a concreter/kerber. He has a GU coil TD42T and tows a car trailer (converted to work trailer) loaded with equipment and consumables, and the tray loaded with equipment, 6 days a week. He passes me on the freeway everymorning, and has no dramas sitting on 110km/h. All he has done to it is snorkel/suspension/3" exhaust.

I reckon you'd be hard pressed to find many dissapointed TD42T owners.

If you want something that "feels" like your driving a car - get a falcon.

Edit: forgot. I dont think it matters how often you service the ZD30 either. Some things just weren't meant to be.

There are a few of things you can do for your 3-litre to avoid the bang-bang.
- fit boost and EGT gauges (should be mandatory for all turbo diesels anyway) and keep an eye on the levels
- change the AFM every 100,000ks or as required
- don't use anything other than the Nissan air filters
- catch can
- service regularly, min 5000k's
- auto's anecdotally seem to be more reliable than manuals

If you go nuts with the mods . . .
- 3-inch zorst with dump pipe
- dawes valve to bypass the factory boost control, plus needle valve
- intercooler fan
- block EGR valve
- chip

I've done all of the above to mine and its a 2002 model and had no problems. Boost levels set to max of 15psi and EGT don't go past 500C.

Yes, the 3-litres are more maligned than the 4.2, but if you keep an eye of the vitals and address the known areas that fail, there is no reason why it can't provide you with many years of reliable service.

Yeah, there is stuff that others have done as well like fitting another fuel pump so there is positive pressure at the injector pump, using the Consult software live via an in car computer, but I'm not quite that fussy.

why though, should anyone have to do any of that to make sure their engine lasts past 100 000km?

A stock untouched engine serviced by the book should be capable of lasting AT LEAST 200 000km. If it can't, it shouldn't be for sale.

it was more a slage of of nissan for selling the thing in the first place. Although you're right, it is BORING:!:, it's not nearly as amusing as all the people trying to convince them selves that it's not a bad engine.

those owners still shouldn't have to do anything to protect it. it SHOULD be up to the task, in a navara it's great engine and they hardly ever fail.

It wouldnt be 1/100000th as bad if Nissan stood by their product.. I feel for these people, its fuking wrong that they have had to go thru this stress etc...

Many people have been thru immense stress and hardship after a grenade went tits up... not everyone has $15,000 laying around just to replace an engine that didnt make it to 100,000 when you would expect 5 times that length of klms. Specially the young bloke on one forum whose engine died within a week of buying.

200,000km?? I would have thought at least 300-400 for a diesel.

And yes, i dont think ANYONE should have to do ANY extra maintenence/modification to a new car just in the hope it will last xxxkm. Thats why engineers get paid a bazillion dollars for, and you would think as time goes on engine longevity would increase - not decrease...... :?

I agree with what you are saying wrt Nissan's service, their relative lack of accountability and the expectation of the engines longevity. And I really feel for those who have had to shell out fifteen gorillas for a new or rebuilt engine. I guess I am taking a more pragmatic approach these days. I own one, I use it, I know they have a higher than normal likelihood of failing, I know that Nissan's service sucks ar5e. If we look at those facts, then what do we have control of? We know that Nissan aren't going to change (yeah you might get the rebuild kit out of them if you car is out of warranty, but only after heaps of effort) and most have too much invested to change-over their vehicle just because the engine might blow up. So instead of using this forum to whinge about a topic done to death, I was concentrating on what owners can do to address the problem. The modifications that I suggested are extremely well documented on this site and others, particularly patrol4x4.com and are really just "bolt-on" with no need to open the engine. And there is a large community of ZD30 owners more than willing to help other through the process. All it requires is a little time to understand your engine and how to protect it. I acknowledge that it will never have the reliability of a TD42, but with a little knowledge and some careful modification it is my opinion that it can be every bit as capable in getting 99% of the owners where they should be going . . . off the blacktop.

Of course, for those who are considering whether to buy one or not, then you have the luxury of choice . . . .

Ya have to love the 4.2td when you are lumping over a sand hill in third low at about 800rpm and still pulling through the soft sand. Try doing that in a 3.0. Hang on, you wouldnt!

ZD30's are ok but make sure you get 2003 and up. lower the km the better and full service history.

TD42 all the way Much stronger and more reliable than a ZD30.

Boost restriction is a very bad idea, it raises your EGT's which melts pistons. I wish people would stop trying petrol ideas on a diesel. EGT's of 500C would be measured post-turbo or pre-turbo with a probe that's too short to get an accurate reading. Either way it's a concern.

Current one 12/2010 had since jan and done 45 000km and not blow yet... If it lasts to 150 ooo after 3 years i will have slightly more respect for the common rail.... for no other reason than last one was not and it blew and gearbox (auto blew in previous one @ 104 000)

Repeat after me Extended nissan warranty....... Extended nissan warranty............ extended nissan warranty.... then just get into it.

And for those who said 3 L is good on fuel... wash your mouth out :finger:

Just had a friend blow up her 06 Patrol. 137k. had piston failure. Pity I didn't get a photo of my 4.2td towing it to the mechanics to get it repaired :D

Don't worry Bingham, you're on the latest revised list.
That one was back in 08, it's a bit bigger now especially the Patrol forum list.
