MQ Coil Conversion
I've been looking into a coil transplant for the rear of my MQ shorty and have a few problems..
My original plan was to take a complete rear axle from either 80ser or GQ (rather 80ser for longs down the track) lengthen the arms and weld it all in using OEM chassis brackets from a donor chassis. but...
The diffs in it now are 4.625 ratio and they are perfect! If anything, I would go higher.. maybe 4.88. But to keep cost down for now i will see if i can match the front.
From my searching, 80ser only ever come out in 4.11 and the only after market R&P sets i can find are 4.56 or 4.88? Is it possible to achieve a 4.625 ratio using 80ser ????
The other option is 2.8TD GQ rear end which is 4.625 but they're rare as rocking horse shit.
I have a spare complete rear MQ diff which i could link up but i thought it would be easier using OEM bits to take out the guess work...
Anyone got a crazy solution for me??

Re: MQ Coil Conversion
You can get 4.6 ratio after market out of the states for a hilux and landcruiser diffs, Chris from Kamikarzi has them in his Lego Lux from TTC runs 4.6s in his hybrid 60/lux diff in the rear.

MacArthur4x4 .... Oh.... I mean MogLux, we're can you get 4.6 for a lc diff?
Just coil the MQ diff mate.

Re: MQ Coil Conversion
Correct me if im wrong but you are talking about rear diff swap??? Longfield make CVand axle sets for front diffs as do cal offroad, so a gq would be the better choice and unless ur running some serious HP, like 400hp+ and massive tyres you wont bust a gq rear end and 4.6 gears are readily available, you would be mad to put an 80s rear end in as i have seen 80s ring and pinion explode and make a big mess.

I read it too mean complete swap. Rear now front later.MEGATROL wrote:Correct me if im wrong but you are talking about rear diff swap??? If it was me (starting from scratch) i would do a budscustoms gq/80s custom diff. Best of the Aussie Centres (front) and best axles. Cals aren't worth it, i know. And cheapest strongest rear too suit. It's an mq so it'll be heavy.

Re: MQ Coil Conversion
I did a coil conversion on the back end of my MQ and used the MQ housing etc. I found the weak link in the rear was axles and had some billet steel ones made up. Personally if you wanted to keep the MQ chassis and coil the front I would put in a GU front diff, but that wouldn't be straight forward either.
GQ Ute V8, EFS lift, Silverstones.
Re: MQ Coil Conversion
Sorry; I wasnt clear guys It's the REAR diff im talking about and ONLY the rear. Ive got the front leafs workin pretty well and want to match it in the rear...
So grab a complete rear coil diff, only fab/weld chassis mounts then bolt it all up, Another reason for 80ser, Dad has one i can look at to copy.
I thought 80ser were just as strong as GQ? How readily available are 4.6's for a GQ?

Re: MQ Coil Conversion
Will 15in rims fit over rear calipers on 80ser? I know the front won't..
Re: MQ Coil Conversion
My MQ is coil rear spoa front. Was original done with the stock MQ diff, I broke like 3 or 4 axles (smashing the Centres and air locker) so I put a shaved GQ Leaf H260 in. I run 2inch spacers and run 40x13.5 treaps
Leaf diffs are narrower than coil diffs (gq) and GU would be crazy wide on an MQ saw an MQ with GQ Coils diffs and thy was wide as.
Cal

Re: MQ Coil Conversion
I would use 60 series diffs if you want strength. I wish i went them in my old MQ and you have the added plus of having the same offset of the rear diff center and longfield upgrades aswell.

Its not cool, unless it's got boost :)
Re: MQ Coil Conversion
Im not keen on using the MQ diffs as I have broken axles on 33's. But it would cut costs down a heap cos ive already one!
A big reason for me wanting to use a factory coil diff is most of the fab work is done and geometry is set. Stripping back a leaf diff and coiling it is alot of work for little old me..
I dont think a 4 link will fit in a shorty because of fuel tank clearance on the top truss. A 5 link will be more than enough for what I want.
What have you done for a tank Ben?
I had a thought that if I get like 8in coils and set ride height with the chassis mount then they would articulate excellent yeah?

Re: MQ Coil Conversion
Does an MQ cab fit on a GQChassis?
Wtb, 105 series rear tyre carrier, alloys and tyres.
Re: MQ Coil Conversion
Mine was an SD33T but is now falcon 6, very different and a 106inch wheelbase too.
I have a 25ish litre cell in cargo area

Re: MQ Coil Conversion
That was the next question i had for you Ben, was it much of a task to stretch the wheelbase?
Any problems like fuel filler getting in the way of guard chop, brake lines, driveshaft?

I didn't fo the stretch mate. Original builder did. But I was there lol it was hard trying too fit everything in with out cutting the floor pan.
Got the cell do no filler. The Gaurd cut was easy just made new skins for the inside. Brakes are all custom anyway (cutting brakes and air brakes) the driveshaft is 60s Toyota on one end GQ H260 on the other with a heavy ass tube
