External reg, or alternator.

Post by Chucky »

The Alternator on my 60 is no longer working.
All connections and earths etc look good, but I don't know how to tell if it's the external reg or the Alt that's buggered.

So, can anyone give me a heads up on how to check both.
I've done a search and it's $300 for a 80Amp new replacement. So if it comes to that, I'll just replace it rather than get it fixed, but if it's just the reg, I'd be happy with not spending the extra cash.
Also, any handy hints on where to get a External reg from? I did the run around today to the repco/Supercrap/Autobarn places and most didn't even know what I was talking about. So any help would be appreciated.

$40 for a used, modern, internally regulated alternator from a falcon or commodore (one or the other will be relatively easy to fit)... assuming it's not a diesel that needs a vac pump on the alternator.
This is not legal advice.

It's a diesel.
So I need the Vac pump.

Thought about fitting a elec vac pump or even a belt driven dedicated vac pump.....but thats another thread.

Got the Alt tested and it's stuffed.
$349 for a replacement 80amp unit, with new ext reg so all up, not as bad as it could have been.

Cheers
