YES = Magna 3.5 into NL Pajero

There have been a few enquiries regards my engine swap so here is a copy of my post from another forum.
"I have just finished fitting a TL magna 3.5 v6 into my NL Pajero.
I know a lot has been said about the 3.0 but nobody seamed to be 100% sure about the 3.5.
Yes it does fit. Like the 3.0 you have to strip EVERYTHING off the Magna motor until you are down to the basic long motor, this includes the oil pump, drive plate and LHF cam gear.
There were only a couple of issues to deal with which were overcome with about an hours extra work.
The heads are different castings (and sorry, no, I don't know if the Magna heads will fit onto the pajero block) and a small corner has to be cut off the RHF for a bracket to fit back on. (It is only a projection with a stud hole and is not important)
The next problem is a bit more involved but can be overcome with a bit of flat 1.5 or so steel or aluminium flat bar. The Magna runs a distributor but the Pajero has coil packs so it has a cam angle sensor behind the LH cam sprocket but there are no holes to bolt it to on the magna head. I made up a bracket using the flat bar held to the head by a 6mm bolt in the unused hole behind the sprocket and then wraped the bracket around the head and used two screws to hold it to the side of the head. I then copied the exact sensor location from the Pajero head and drilled two holes in the bracket to hold the sensor. You then have to use the sprocket and disc from the Pajero and Bobs your uncle!!
Everything else has to be transfered from the Pajero motor but it all fits without mods.
It took me just on 22 hours from start to finish, including stripping the Magna motor, and could not be happier with the result.
The motor I used had just over 100000 on it and is great on petrol and gas. No settings had to be changed and is as smooth as silk.
Total cost including new platinum plugs, cam belt kit, water pump, oils filter, oil and the second hand motor came in at under $1500.
Unfortunately you can't use the injectors from the Magna motor as they are different lengths.
I hope this helps anyone contemplating doing this swap and now you can be sure it will fit."

Thanks .. I am about to have a go at this this weekend ... I to will be using a TL magna motor $880 for the motor delivered The magna when stacked had 83,000 Ks on it. woot woot .. it is almost excatly 200,000Ks younger than mine.

I will try to take some pics of the mods you mention.

Well it is mostly done, refit radiator, top up fluids etc to do detail stuff .. hopefully the thing will go and I have not buggered up anything else in the process ..

I have a NH (I think, its a 96) and with the 6G72 heads on the way out i was considering swapping out to the 6G74.

Would i be able to pick up a 6G74 from a magna, and bolt on all the bits from the 6G72 onto the 6G74 and have it fit?
Fast, Cheap, Reliable -- Pick any two, and the third is laughable.

The 6G74 came with a larger gearbox, transfer and rear diff (to cope with the extra torque), and required a "factory body lift" (about 30mm) to create clearance for the larger components.

The complete driveline swap can be done (and body lift added) but, if your NH is in good condition, you might be better off looking for later model rolling chassis to transfer your body onto. It's been done before.

Cool, im aware about the difference in drivetrain - still not sure what im going to do about it though.
Is the auto trans any different between the models?

This truck is a gift from my father in law, personally i was looking at range rovers - but this is in the drive, and im starting to like the way she looks (and seating 7 is a bit of a bonus too :))


Im trying to work out a plan to get this thing setup as a tourer, atm the list is;
2" body lift, 2" suspension lift, 33's, and some more torque!!
I was considering supercharging, but i think the factory blower from the ralliart magna isnt going to fit (the plumbing comes in from the back, and i think the blower sits too far back in the valley) and the missus isn't going to let me blow that much cash all at once.

So what im going to need is the bigger t/case, rear diff and possibly the auto trans before i bolt in a 6G74. Might take a spin past a few wreckers and check some prices.



So, would all the bolt on bits swap from the 3L to the 3.5?
From what i can gather, getting a "pajero" motor is much more expensive than getting a "magna" motor, a cost i would love to avoid

Sounds familiar. :D Makes an awesome touring setup - make sure you have the Mitsu rear LSD.

Mine is a little lacking in the torque department, but will still overtake OK on the highway. Hills are a bit of a problem, and a set of crawlers fixed offroad performance - what was that you were saying about money? :lol:

If you're prepared to go supercharger, there has been some traffic here about kits to suit Pajero, and I'm fairly confident that the 3l motor was on the list. Have you had a bit of a dig?

I'm also reasonably confident that any of the 6G72 motors can be dropped into a Paj (once ancillaries are bolted over). So also price Magna and Triton motors - you gain the benefit (?) of 24V with most of them, too. Might be easier than trying the 6G74 upgrade.

Final thought: if you're primarily interested in touring, and are prepared to embark on engine swaps, look at the DiD. More power than your 3l V6, mountains more torque, much better economy (and touring range) and the same block as the 2.8td in NJ onwards. Unfortunately will still need the larger gearbox / transfer (and yes, auto is different box - go the 5 speed behind the DiD).

Might start working on getting the drivetrain swapped over.
The Mitsubishi oil fairy keeps visiting and stealing my oil, so im going to have to figure something out in the next year or two.


Hmm, just had a bit of a thought - i have the twin turbos off a RB26DETT, and enough skill to fabricate manifolds and piping.
No no no - bad idea, well ... too expensive an idea ...

i am looking at getting a challenger (i like the look of them but i was really wanting a diesel) and i was wondering how much work is there in swapping in a triton or pajero turbo diesel, do they use the same engine mountings etc. (i am guessing i will need the paj/triton gearbox/transfer as well)

I don't know what would be involved. The Challenger is (AFAIK) a wagon version of the Triton, so the Triton engine bay should (in theory) swap in pretty easily. I don't know about the rest of the drive train.

The 2.8td in later Tritons (before the ML) is essentially the same block as the 3.2 DiD, so I would (again) investigate using mounts from the 2.8td to swap the 3.2 DiD in.

thats the thing i am trying to figure out ,, if the mounts for the diesel are in the same place on the chassis as the V6 (if they are it will make it so much easier for the swap)
