Unifilter into 4.5L petrol GU engine.
Unifilter into 4.5L petrol GU engine.
Hey all,
I'm trying to get my shitbox 4.5L petrol GU to go a bit better.
I just picked up a unifilter airfilter and went to install it.
When I pulled the standard paper filter out of the air box I found that the big round steel plate that sealed the airbox is glued to the factory paper airfilter.
When I installed the aftermarket unifilter it does not have the round plate that screws on to seal the airbox.
Has anyone installed one of these airfilters?? And do I need to order another part as a kit from Unifilter (Sealing plate) or am I missing something??
Any help would be great??

Re: Unifilter into 4.5L petrol GU engine.
dont do it.
the oil from the filter will wreck your airflow meter.

Re: Unifilter into 4.5L petrol GU engine.
Really??
Did this happen to U??
What about a K+N filter?
I know they dont filter as well but I used to have one in my GQ TD42 and whenever I did a decent trip offroad I used to use pool skimmer box sock over the filter and snorkel head with a little bit of filter oil and it worked a treat.

Re: Unifilter into 4.5L petrol GU engine.
YOU HAVE TO HEAT THE LID UP AND REMOVE IT FROM THE OLD FILTER..
I HAVE HAD MINE IN FOR 18 MONTHS NOW AND HAVE HAD NO OIL PROBLEMS ..
I USE A VERY TACKY MOTORBIKE FOAM FILTER OIL ON MINE..

Re: Unifilter into 4.5L petrol GU engine.
Hey ash,
Does it make it go any better. Mine is going like a bucket of crap so I going to do a 2 1/4" exhaust with high flow cat and a snorkel with filter to try and make it go a bit better.
What did you use to heat the glue off with? Did the paper filter want to catch on fire?

Re: Unifilter into 4.5L petrol GU engine.
i used a heat gun which gets the glue hot enough that you can pull the paper filter away slowly but you will still have to clean of the extra glue afterwards..
i dont think that you really will notice that much differents when its in..
i have had a new 2 1/4 exhaust fitted with no cat and it has extractors which made it a bit better..
i've got a snorkel as well but i to think that they need more power...
is yours a manual or auto ???
mines is a auto and i dont use the o/d anymore as it loads up to much in o/d..
all the extra weight doesnt help..bullbar/winch , kaymar rear bar , rock sliders , roof rack/awnings , rear drawer's/fridge and heaps of shit in them , long range tank and the 285/75/16 make it to higher geared..
i have some 4.3 gears to put in after christmas so i hope will make it come to life..
cheers ash

Re: Unifilter into 4.5L petrol GU engine.
Yeah mine is an auto ti. So it's a big pig. Also running same tyres, sliders, winch bar(no winch), sliders, rack, awning 60l fridge with cargo barrier and basic fridge box. The weight is not helping.
Just bashed the guts out of the cat which freed it up a bit although still a pig.
The gearing should help a bit. Where did u source the gears from?

Re: Unifilter into 4.5L petrol GU engine.
I to had a bucket of puss tb45, tried all the cheapish mods, exhaust, filters etc I ended up throwing in a 304 5.0l which was still inadequate so I put a top mount blower on it with gas injection and guess what..? I'm finally happy!!
My advice is turbo and gas inject it and you won't look back!!

Re: Unifilter into 4.5L petrol GU engine.
I used the mother in laws wok burner on her bbq to melt the factory paper filter off the lid for the air box.
So between the new air filter and cleaning the cat out it has made a small difference and a help in fuel economy so far. Not massive but the difference was noticed. I think the 13 year old cat was fucked as I could hardly even see daylight thru it. I will try a new exhaust next week and hope that helps a little more.
As for turbo's I'm not looking for a race truck and sure as hell dont want to waste 5 or 10 g right now. However if I did have the cash lying around I wouldnt be fucking round with turbo's I would go straight for a 6litre v8 or a duramax!

Re: Unifilter into 4.5L petrol GU engine.
i got hold of a set f/r complete centres 4.3's with a auto lokka all set up ready to put in for $700 of the patrol forum..
so the lid came of easy then???
i think all the mods you ever do to a 4.5 they we still be slow when you carry all the extra gear on board..
all patrol's need some sort of turbo or larger turbo fitted to make themget up and go so just learn to live with it....

Re: Unifilter into 4.5L petrol GU engine.
Yeah the filter came off easy as.
After reading about the trouble people are having with rods coming out the side of the block and auto's dieing after they have spent a small fortune with a turbo install I dont think I will be going down that track.
I think I will do a few cheap mods to make the most of it and drive it till it shits itself then look at a new heart being either a gen3 or a diesel of some description. Think I may have bought myself some 36" simex's so reduction gears will probably be on the list at some stage.
Let us know how the 4.3's go Ash!

know worrys it should be mid january
Re: Unifilter into 4.5L petrol GU engine.
It didnt happen to be because I know better. On other peoples cars I have seen half dozen or so do this. Hot wire type airflow meters get coked up because the oil from the filter builds up on them. They become slow responding then eventually get flagged as faulty by the ECU.DanwinGQ wrote:Really??

the sensor is a tiny wire that a fixed current goes through to make it hot. as the wire heats up the resistance increases. The more air flows over the tiny wire the cooler it is. this resistance change is what the ECU is using to decide how much fuel to put in your engine. Now if you put a blob of oil on it it becomes slower resposing, and then that oil burns it makes an insulating layer on the wire.
This sensor is why LPG taxis ofen blow up their airboxes. the hot wire ignites the gas.

What sort of oil do you use???
The filter oil i use is a spray on and it is so tacky after you let it sit for 15 minutes and theres no sign of oil behind the filter...
Its been on there for 18 months now and i have not had any problems yet?
Also what about the k&n filter needs oil aswell so how does that work???
Re: Unifilter into 4.5L petrol GU engine.
Filter oil as recommended by the filter people. Oiled foam and Oiled cotton filters both do it.
Suck 1000 cfm or so thru a filter and it's going to pull any excess oil right off it into the air stream. Your airflow meter will prematurely fail, no biggie just be aware of it.
Feel the pipes and you will notice an oily residue if you run one of these for a while.
That's why the crankcase ventilation pipe always goes in downstream of the AFM.

stuff 2 & 1/4" exhaust just get a 3" straight through, that's what I'm gonna do when $$ allows

Re: Unifilter into 4.5L petrol GU engine.
IMO unless forced induction is used 3inch is wayyyy to big on a lazy tb45. 2 3/4 max, I had a 2.5 inch mandrel high flow jobby on mine with pacemakers and that was plenty! Noise became a problem once I tried bigger plus no gain in power!

Well the 4.3's are in and it's made a fair bit of different's to the way its drives ...
I now can use my o/d on the hwy without the convertor jumping in and out all the time and with it now doing 1950 rpm with the o/d on.
My speedo is now out by 12kph now but i will deal with that later..
I now have the auto locker in front and the l.s.d tightened right up which is going take a bit to get use to..
all up so far it's a good mod but i will now see how the fuel stats go..

Re: Unifilter into 4.5L petrol GU engine.
After all the basic mods i did to my TB45 auto , by far the best thing I ever did was the gas injection, i got a significant economy increase of almost an extra 100ks/ tank of gas depending on driving style and a massive power increase. I was very happy with the results, High flow sports exhaust made a small difference as well.
