60series diffs under a hilux help??
i know this have been covered alot before but cant find all the information
i want to put 60 series diffs under my hilux, purely trailor rig
so my questions are
how is the steering setup? (what needs to be done)
what do you do about the rear pumkin offset? leave it ?( with have dual transfer in too)
how to improve strengh in a 60 series diffs?
is the 60series front diff off set the same as a hilux?
cheers
this is a budget build

Re: 60series diffs under a hilux help??
Front diff should be same offset.
Flip the rear diff and rotate the third so the driveshaft clears the tank.
Decent CVs and axles all round will make them pretty tuff and a little bit of truss work wont hurt either.
An IFS lux steering box should work with leafs as well, but not 100% sure about that.

Re: 60series diffs under a hilux help??
For steering you needa go HI STEER knuckles and put a IFS steering box in.
93 duel cab lux. 2.8 TD twin locked. Big tyres, little lift. Wide stance. Barwork and build up under way
Re: 60series diffs under a hilux help??
cheers
also will i have to cut and turn the knuckles as it will be soa or anything like that on the front

Re: 60series diffs under a hilux help??
Depending on your spring setup and desired castor and pinion angles you may need to cut and rotate knuckles
For the rear just flip the housing around, rotate your brakes and centre so they arent upside down and fix up your diff drain. Front knuckles are same as hilux so you can use hilux high steer arms, also cvs and long side axle are same as hilux, short side axle is longer than hilux (about 3") Aftermarket gear readily available. An ifs steer box will need to be fitted to the chassis and steering links made to suit your diff etc, as generic lux stuff is too short. You need to flip your rear to clear the tank and the uni angles will be fine.
Unless you are running a v8 or 6 you should be able to get away with a lux rear diff with a v6 (surf and newer lux) rear diff centre, i got 5 months out of one as opposed to one week with the regular lux one. Less work and very similar strength, axles are pretty well the same, go into members and look at my build up with 60 front diff

Re: 60series diffs under a hilux help??
Can you make the 60s diffs work with a RUF and IFS rears setup??
Will already have histeer fitted.
Is it engineerable for onroad??
Was yours plated with the 60s diff Zuri??

correct me if im wrong but arent 60 diffs histeer from the factory? billet arms and chromoly links are a worth while upgrade but not necessary straight away?

Cruiser diffs will work fine with IFS and RUF.DUDELUX wrote:Can you make the 60s diffs work with a RUF and IFS rears setup??

No. There is a drag link (no J arm) but the stock steering arms are meant to clear sprung under leafs which is why you'll need hi steer arms to clear on a Lux that's sprung over.dbeverett wrote:correct me if im wrong but arent 60 diffs histeer from the factory? billet arms and chromoly links are a worth while upgrade but not necessary straight away?

Re: 60series diffs under a hilux help??
This is probably posted somewhere, but exactly how much wider are the 60s diffs compared to the stock(non- IFS) Lux diffs??
Just wondering for engineering.

Re: 60series diffs under a hilux help??
I believe they are 70mm wider. So about 3 inches as mentioned above. "long side same length, short side 3 inches longer" comment. So to answer the original posters question. One would assume the front driveshaft would be offset 1.5 inches to the passenger side.
Re: 60series diffs under a hilux help??
would the hilux hubs and diff centre fit onto an 60?
aka if i just had a 60 series house could i take all stuff off my hilux diff and use it on the 60series(besides the axles obiviously)

Re: 60series diffs under a hilux help??
Hilux's have an 8" diff (the diameter of the crownwheel) and the 60 series have a 9.5" diff so the centres are not interchangeable. If they were, they would need to be the same size and there would be no benefit.smoothy56 wrote:would the hilux hubs and diff centre fit onto an 60?

The hubs are interchangeable (ie. swivel hub, spindle, hub and brakes) as are the CV joints.
Re: 60series diffs under a hilux help??
Cut and shut an 80 rear so you get a disc brake rear and a centered pumpkin.
(Ends up the same width as an IFS rear lux diff)
Keep your existing front diff add a 80 series High pinion center with either a locker or a late V6 hilux 4 pinion carrier.
Also fit a wide track kit. (then it'll match the track of the rear diff)
Just as strong as a 9.25" cruiser diff and a lot lighter, also you won't get chassis/pumpkin clearance issues when flexed up as well as 1" more ground clearance

Re: 60series diffs under a hilux help??
Black Bull, are you saying 2 short side axles & tubes on an 80 rear housing gives you around 1480 - 1500mm in width ??
Or are custom axles also needed ?

I havn't done it myself, got a housing sitting on the floor, I'll measure up and report backMr DJ wrote:Black Bull, are you saying 2 short side axles & tubes on an 80 rear housing gives you around 1480 - 1500mm in width ??

I thought everyone says the high pinion 80 front diff arnt very strong at all??? I may be worng tho plz correct me if i am but I would imagne they would be lighter and give a little more pumpkin clearance

Re: 60series diffs under a hilux help??
The biggest killer with diff centers is deflection under load.
It's one of the reasons 9" centers are so bulletproof, they have a second bearing on the end of the pinion.
The Cruiser high pinions run bigger bearings than most hilux centers, ( I believe the V6 and current model centers are the only other ones that run these bearings)
The case is also quite solid.
Not sure if the "backwards" gear cutting helps with longevity but I guess it would or why would Toyota bother ?
The biggest letdown with the factory cruiser high pinion center was the 2 pinion carrier. but a locker cures that issue
Ok, some muddy maths
I'll do an Excell sheet up later to go into more depth
solid axle Hilux is 1397mm WMS-WMS
Early IFS lux 1473mm WMS-WMS
Late IFS Lux 1612mm WMS-WMS
80 series is 1612mm WMS-WMS
Long side cruiser axle 925mm
short side cruiser axle 735mm
So, a short side axle is 190mm shorter
1612-190=1422mm
so just inbetween early and mid hilux's
BUT
if you're crafty enough you can use IFS hilux hubs on the front AND rear and gain 35mm a side
which gives you
Front 1467mm
Rear 1492mm
Add 10mm stud/dowel upgrade, a set of longs front and rear, good quality cryo treated R&P and you've got a near bullet proof setup.
Another way is to use a 40/60/80/100 rear center and graft hilux tubes onto it and use Hilux axles (same spline)
But then your stuck with non floating axles and drum brakes/disc conversion
Either way, apart from the housing, it's all factory Toyota goodness

Re: 60series diffs under a hilux help??
Just remebered, two other options.
Use an 80 front, and IF you can find one a 200 series rear as they are center offset.
Just change the hubs and brakes to get the 6 stud pattern back.
Lastly, a 120 seris Prado I've been told is also center offset, same track as an IFS lux
Has a different center housing and R&P but has the same carrier as a lux.
Hope some of that helps

Re: 60series diffs under a hilux help??
Mine seems to handle front diggs with 36's and a 5.0 V8 without any problems, tho sticky treps might change the game a bit.4X4 shorty wrote:Black Bull wrote: Keep your existing front diff add a 80 series High pinion center..... Just as strong as a 9.25" cruiser diff
