84 hilux auto gearbox conversion

Hi People,

I have an 84 hilux with a VN V6 Commodore motor (3.8L) and a standard 5 speed hilux gearbox. The clutch is gone and needs replacing, but I want to put an automatic gearbox in it.

Can anyone steer me in the right direction? Anyone done this before? What would I be looking at replacing? And has anyone got an automatic to suit? What would be a good box to use?

Thanks to anyone that can steer me in the right direction. I know JACK about car stuff (I just drive em), so if you can be a specific cause im a bit of a newbie to 4wd mods. Also if anyone knows of someone who could do this work for me around Sydney, please let me know.

Roughly what soughta cost (total) would I be looking at, with labour?

Hi Brad

Marks Adaptors have a kit for what you want I think it is $900 ex Melbourne
If you must take the MANual trans out and fit a GIRLamatic I am interested in the MANual conversion kit
You will need to get a VN/P T700 girltrans and flex plate
Do you know if you have a series 1 or 2 engine as they have different bolt paterns on the crankshaft

Mines a series 1 VN motor ( I think ). Whats the easiest way to tell?

Does anyone have a suitable adapter kit and auto box for sale?

If I did decide to get the clutch replaced instead of fitting an auto - would it be a hilux clutch, or a commodore clutch? Gearbox is original hilux. The adapter has me all confused.

Assuming you have the Marks conversion you will need a
Commodore V6 pressure plate with the 5 litre 6 spring clutch plate
and face the flywheel
If you have a Dellow or CRS kit you want the same pressure plate with the 10" Dyna clutch plate
Series 1 has the water outlet under the throttle body at the back of the engine
Series 2 has water outlet at the front of the engine

Actually I just remembered if yours is SERIES 1 engine you will have to change the crank if you want to Go GIRLamatic as the have different bolt patterns from MANual to GIRLamatic

Yep I have the MARKS conversion.....

So It's a Commodore clutch I'd have. Could I just go and buy a VN Commodore Clutch kit, and that'd have everything I need to completely replace it? (I'll be getting someone to do it for me, won't be attempting myself).

I think given that I've got a series 1, I'll give the auto a miss. Too much mucking around.

Insist on the 6 spring clutch plate
If you the ordinary V6 3 spring and 3 rubber clutch plate you will rip the rubbers up in no time and you will have to do it all over again in a feq months

Sorry I am in Perth so I cant help you with that

But I do make a engine fan to suit the Commodore V6 , I is 11 blade with a viscous hub and it is 16mm shallower than the Marks fixed fan
I also make 3 way adjustable shackles for the Hilux
They have a stock setting plus 45mm pluss 45mm so you can set them up at stock or at 45mm [50% above stock ] or at 90 mm [100% above stock]

It's easy to go to a clutch place and get the parts you want, clutch / pressure plate and don't forget the throw out bearing. If its a marks kit then you'll need the older style throw out that presses on and not the disposible Commodore one.

check if you need to change the crank, because the series 1 vn commo's had an engine for a manual and a different engine for an automatic. but if by some miracle you can convert it i have a t700 out of a vn that i just took out of a car.
