Things to look for in a series 1 Disco

Post by B.D.R »

G'day all

Looking at rejoining the Land rover club

Looking at a series 1 Disco, any thing particular i should be aware of, it will be a petty not diesel.

I used to own a Rangie so is it just the usual like drive line lash and what not, or are there particular gremlins i should be hunting for :D .

Thanks
Chris

Slipped liners on a 3.9V8.

But apart from a few small differences they are basically a funny (/nicer) looking rangie.

they get a bit of rust around the alpine windows but as said it is the same as a range rover. Back lash wasn't a real big issue for them. That was more common with the lt95 gearbox in the old range rovers.

Thanks for that.

What are the diffs like, same as a rangie put 35's on listen for the BANG  ?

Think i've found one, just need to off load the current 4WD, and go make an offer

 yep. early D1's had 10 spline axles. From mid 94 the upgraded to 24 spline. A slightly stronger axle but not enough to cope with 35's. The diffs are 2 pinion with 3.54 ratio's in both.

If your going to run 35's dump the diffs and axles.

Check the cooling system, there are lots with blocked radiators.

I will be going Maxi drive lockers and axles if it all goes ahead so no busted diffs this time  .

Do series 1's have mounting spots for 2 baby seats?

Yes they have spots for 2 baby seats.

35" tyres are right on the upper limit of tolerance for Maxi-Drive gear, IMHO. You'd be better off with Toy converted diffs or a straight swap with 80 series front and back or Nissan front and 80 rear.

Bump :D

Looks like I may have found my unicorn, so it looks like I will be reacquainting myself with the Landrover foibles

What are Ashcroft CV's\C&P and Axles like?

I know people bang on about how bad rover diffs are, and I DO agree, but I have seen some last down here in Vic fairly well  , and seeing as if I get this thing an axle swap IS out of the question, would Ashcroft gear stand up to 34's, driven like it should be driven CARFULLY :D
