Identifying a Toyota diesel motor in FJ40

Post by CC »

Hello all,

I just recently acquired a nice FJ40 chassis with a diesel motor on it and I would like to find out what motor it is. I have the
engine number and some other numbers but I cannot find what motor it is so I can figure out what to do next with the motor
if it's worth rebuilding or not.

Maybe someone can point me to the right direction.

Thank you

On the bottom back left side block it comes up with H75xxx and on the right side of the block there's two different numbers 47015 and a big 23 on top of 90713.

might want to wait for someone else to confirm, but I would guess that as it starts with H, it's a "H" engine. 3.6L I think?

Alright, I was told it was a 4.2ltr 6cyc diesel. But I know the FJ/BJs didn't have 4.2ltr only 4.0 and below. I hope to hear something about this soon.

Nah. They didn't bring out a 4.2 diesel till 70 series.

If it's the original engine, it's more than likely a H. Unless its a 47 not a 40?

This is why I want to know if it was an original motor not a different one. I'll just have to wait and hope someone from OL can shed a light on this! Nah my chassis is definitely a FJ40.

Got a pic? Will be easy to tell then. The 3.6 litre H motor has the oil filter on the passenger side, paper cartridge in a steel canister, absolute MONGREL to reinstall the canister without pinching the o ring as it's on a crappy angle. I got a adaptor to change the filter to a Z416 spin on type. 2H has the oil filter on the driver's side, spin on filter, Ryco's model number is X161X I think. Of course if there's the 4 cylinder B or 3B, the above doesn't apply. :D

Okay... I'll have to take a photo of it. It has no heads, just the block/pistons with few things. I'll take one tomorrow and upload it here.

If its an FJ40 it should be a petrol engine unless it has been retroed.

Have another look at the chassis number: FJ, petrol, HJ 6 cylinder diesel, BJ 4 cylinder diesel (as I remember it)

Also the engine number will have the engine prefix in it. H for the early 6 cylinder, B for the 4 cylinder (3B, 3BT ect) & 2H from 1984.

From memory, the 40's did not ever have the 6 cylinder diesel from factory, only the 4.

The Wiki article is pretty generic & not Auss pecific so when I talk about the 40 & the diesel I mean OZ only.

On the subject of the F sereis engine, I had a 73 model with a F155 engine in it. Man it used to go well, I reckon it was way better than any 2F I have ever driven & was pretty good on fuel, no more than my VH Commodore 6 cylinder was. Most 2F engines are terrible on fuel & felt odd, like they were strngled.

Its a bit like when Ford moved to Crossflow engines, they were abysmal until the XE with the alloy head, larger ports & Weber carby. They should have stuck with the 2V head, a much better effort. The only thing is the 2F stayed abysmal, it never really had any updates until the end.

I've never seen a h before but that's not a 2H or a 1HZ so I think it must be a H being 6 cyl and diesel.

Not sure, my guess is H motor.

Or a great boat anchor...

You sure it's on a SWB chassis? I'm tipping you've got a ute chassis.

I'll find the chassis number and I'll see if I can scrub down the block and see what else comes up.

This, I bet its a HJ45. There is not enugh on that engine to identify it. Do you have the rocker cover? The rocker cover on the H is just a rectangular shape with a flat tom where the 2H was bulgy on top.

Definitely a H donk, the oil filter is the giveaway. Plus the fuel filter being a cartridge in the canister too, the 2H fuel filter is a small spin on. Not that it's much good for anything now. Thrrrrrrrrrroooooowwww it out.

It's definitely a FJ40 - 281xxx as it says on the chassis. The motor came with the chassis like it is, but though looking at the photos(post above me) it does look like a H motor. Definitely a boat anchor, not worth wasting my time/money rebuilding those.

Or the 2H, I would skip them both & go for a 1HZ or the turbo versions of the same era. The only good thing about a 2h is the engine braking, apart form that the 1HZ's are much better effort.

I was thinking of going 12H-T - I want to keep it diesel and 6cyl not a v8 or petrol.

fj40 never came with a H? only a B(early) and 3B(later)

FJ45 and FJ47(ute and troopy) came with H and 2H.

so if that is a factory fit engine, id say its a FJ45 chassis.???

Never know, someone might have chucked the original petrol and installed the H. BTW, no such thing as a FJ 47.

Petrol engined 40s were called the FJ 40 or FJ 45, regardless of whether the F or 2F engine is installed. Diesels were the BJ 40 with 3 litre B motor, BJ 42 with the 3B, HJ 45 has the H, while the HJ 47 has the 2H. Other markets got the mid wheelbase 43 and 44, we didn't.
