LN106R hilux diff issue/upgrade
HEy all.
My 94 Diesel 4x4 hilux has a diff issue, needs either a rebuild or swap (excessive backlash)
Ive heard a IFS rear diff can go in easy, but need to be sure of ratios and what to do to space front wheels to match increased wheel track of the rear diff.
Also any ideas of what ratio diffs the ute has? Not too sure how to find out.

Are you talking about swapping the whole axle/diff housing?? Or just the centre??
The IFS rear housing is about 2-3 inches wider than the solid axle housing, roughly 1-1.5inches each side.
if you are going to swap yours for a complete housing/axles/centre, you can do it easily, but youll need to space out the front axles to match, Im not 100% on how to do it, but there are plenty of threads here in the Yota Tech section that you could find the correct way of doing it.
I think you need IFS rotors, or hubs or something.

To find out what ratios are in your Lux, have a look at the compliance plate, it should have the driveline(trans/axle) code on there.
Or if you have the diff centre out, count the teeth on the crownwheel, and the teeth on the pinion, and divide them to see what ratio it is(this is the most accurate way in my opinion).
What diesel engine is in your Lux??
Typically, the different engined Luxs came from factory with different diff ratios...
2.4diesel - 4.5
2.8diesel - 4.3
Petrol - 4.8
These are a rough guide as to what Lux came from the factory, but it all means nothing if the centres have been changed at all.

Being a 94 diesel it will be a 4.3 diff( pulled mine out 4 weeks ago)
Yes IFS rear diff will roll under it no issues.
To match the front you need IFS hubs and a widening kit( spaces the rotor back to factory position)
Will give you as said approx 3" gain in width

Thanks for the interest guys, yeah its a 3L 2.8 Non turbo diesel.
Is it worth keeping my centers (put rear one into IFS rear diff housing) or do I use later model diff centres (are they a lower ratio?) AS id like to run 33s at a later date, is it worth upgrading now?

Try and find some 4.8s, from a petrol Lux.
Its probably the most common ratio to fit into any Lux used off road.
It should take the gearing back to standard, on 33s or 35s.
If you leave the 4.3s in there and run 33s, you will be crawling rocks, but you will be going too fast, running 4.8s will allow you to crawl slower.

No worries, will it be easier just going crawler gears in the transfer? Found that diffs r hard to find.

Yes crawlers gears are Easyer but still loads up the motor for general driving. I found the 4.56 out of early model 2.4 work well with 33s. I no run 5.29 with 35s but It's not a daily. Your diff and a IFS diff will be same strength but more then likely different rations. The IFS diff a pulled out was 4.1 or 4.55( differe NT to the 4.56) I don't remember

Generally, the rear diffs from IFS Lux/4runners are LSDs, not open.
And typicaly, Lux/4runner LSDs are useless.

Yeah I agree, the LSD is rubbish. On the hunt for petrol diffs now. The cars no longer a daily (company car and weekender) so the lux may get a locker. Ive found a few auto lockers but not sure if Ill go with one of these or just stick to a Air locker.

You can get good value on auto lockers, plus other bits, if you buy from the US.
I got my 2 lockrights from Lowrange Offroad in the US, it ended up costing me about $575aust. Including postage.

3.0L turbo diesel, 4" lift, bud's front housing, track assasin cv's, air lokker front + Rear, beadlock'd 37 stickies, high steer, 15.5" travel ranchos, high pinion diff and coils on the rear
