Hot engine oil

Post by ifslux »

Hi everyone. just wanting to know how hot is too hot for engine oil in a 4.6 rangie motor ?
my oil temp gauge reads to 300f and the needle sits on the stopper when im out driving. is this normal or should i look into fitting a oil cooler and thermo ? dont want the oil to become to hot and thin and loose oil pressure.

cheers steve.

Its pritty standard as far as i know and the gauge is only brand new. but now come to think of it im pritty sure im not using the sender that came with the gauge cos the thread was different. using a different sender would give the gauge a wrong reading wouldnt it ? also engine bay temps wouldnt be helping either would they. i think i will try sorting the sender out and see how that goes. do you still think a cooler would be helpfull ?

cheers steve.

i would definately be looking into the sender, you can make the oil too cool and its just as bad as hot oil, on a stock engine if its not getting hot i wouldnt bother, i may end up running one on mine but only if it gets over the top, will probably run a cooler and pump on the transfer case before the engine

I got it sorted out. Ended up being the sender. Now it sits on about 70c.
