gu td42t new owner, do's/dont's and my first impressions.

Post by simcoe »

Hi guys, sorry to post up yet another thread about the td42t.
i know there is a heap of info on the forum and the gu bible and also some good reads on the patrol forum but i wanted to share my first thoughts and my wish list and see if im dreaming or not.(i have searched ;) )

ok so its a 2000 st wagon with 290k on the clock, 5th gear is blown but as far as problems with it thats about it.
engine is completely stock apart from the new airbox lid i made last week, its running a safari snorkle as well as the usual draws, bars , racks, sliders and 2 inch lift

this is my new work truck and i have ran 2 full tanks in about 2 wks and im getting 15.5l/100km. now thats with my truck weighing 3t+ with all my tools/ladders etc and i have been towing a half tonne trailer around basically everyday. also did 200 odd kays towing around a bit over 1.5 tonne.
i wasnt driving it crazy hard nor babying it, just drove to the conditions.

im running 33's and have 3.9 diffs and my speedo reads spot on so i got a genuin 505km out of 78l this arfternoon which i though wasnt bad considering that was all stop start city crap towing a heavy ass trailer around.its quite a lugger but my last gu was a blown 5.0l so the power is a little lower ;)

when i bought it i done basically a full service, all oils, filters and greased everything.

so basically my plans are to in this order
1-boost and egt gauge in the pillar pod set up to see what its doing because it doesnt feel like its boosting at 8psi, you cant even hear the turbo..

2- 3' exhaust/dump pipe

3-new injectors

4- pump tune and up the boost to 12-14 and just see what the temps are doing

5 then intercool with a medium sized top mount set up down the track(i have all the piping and bends just need the cooler and scoop.

the tappets are getting done on the wknd which i have been told if there out they can affect performance/ecconomy slightly.

im looking at getting around the 100rwkw if possible and keep the fuel at around the 12-15l/100km mark.
when i change the gear box il also be changing the clutch to a saffari tuff as the guy i bought it off couldnt tell me when it was last done and with all the extra ponies and towing i cant imagine it lasting much longer..

if theres anything i missed or any extra pointers im all ears, iv always owned patrols but they have all be petty's on gas and all my knowlage about the td42 comes from reading everyones info on this and the patrol forum.
oh it also feels bloody awsome to finally be in a sort after big rig:armsup:

cheers

Oh and I also forgot to mention that when I had the air intake off while making my lid I noticed a hell of a lot of oil build up from the breather pipe to the rocker cover, so I plan on fitting an oil catch can as well. But for now should I pull the cast pipe off that attaches to the turbo and give it a good clean!? And should I assume that the turbo is all gunked up as well?

due to the site crash it looks like iv lost a few replys..
so anyway iv had the truck for a month now and have found that basically every fill up is the same.im getting 15.5l/100km, my truck weighs 3.1t plus most days and im towing a work trailer probably 50% of the time which weighs 500kg emtpy and up to 1.7t loaded and boy does the truck feel it..
iv picked up a boost and egt gauge and boost controller which i'l install this wknd to see what the girl is doing in standard form.

iv been looking at several brands of 3' exhausts and dump kits.
beaudesert$1060 delivered seems dear but look like a good product, taipan is in the same boat, the local dude that iv had all my exhaust made by quoted me 1250 for a custom job but on ebay the other day i found and 3' exhaust/dump by Scotts Rods Exhausts for 799 delivered which looks good and is made of alluminsed mild steel, so im keen on that!

i also stated before the site crash that i was keen on the 100rwkw so i know i need the exaust, get boost to 13-15psi and get the pump tuned to suit but is that about it apart from the cooler, which i have been looking at heaps in the last few weeks. im not keen on spending 1k plus on a desert cooler set up or anything in the price range for that matter..i have all the bends and tube so the cooler and scoop is all i need. now will i need a 600/30/76 cooler or will a 450/00/76 be sufficient for my needs? and what brands will be suitable?

im not sure if the 2000 model wagons have the 11mm plunger or not and whether that will affect the power im chasing.
this may sound dumb but does the fuel pump need a tweak after every mod to get the most out of it while still keeping an eye on temps?
ie exhaust then up fuel
more boost then up fuel
cooler then up fuel
new injectors shouldnt need the pump upped?!

being in newcastle there is not many options as far as dyno tuners that KNOW td42t's that i would trust with one..
there is how ever a good pump tuner at Kotara , Rob Rosier, who knows his sh1t but i dont want to have to get the pump tuned after each mod.

i cant quite remember what else i wrote in the posts that got deleted so il look forward to some replys :-)

cheers guys

Are you sure they are 3.9 ratios? I thought all td42 had 4.1s. I'm running 35s and just went to 4.3 from stock 4.1s, so I am half way back to standard. Better on road.
I am getting around 14l per 100kms and mostly weigh in at 2680kgs with me in it.

Gu's run 3.9 in 4.2td wagons. The utes get 4.1s.
3.9s are fine for 33s if going to 35s definately go the 4.3s

My 4.2td GU wagon on 35s and 4.3s gets around 14/15l per 100km buts thats driving in Sydney traffic at under 70km/h.
Open road averages 11l/100km if sitting around 100km/h once you go over 120km/h the economy suffers
It runs 3inch exhaust, 10psi, no intercooler and touch more fuel

iv definately got 3.9s and yeah i'l be sticking with the 33's as with all the ladders on my roof and current lift in the rear i only get in my shed by 50 odd mm, opening is 2.4 and im at 2.35..
also that ecconomy i stated is all city stop/start like yours, and having no 5th gear doesnt help when i should be in 5th.as well as being loaded up..

have you had your truck dynoed TurboGU or did you play with the pump your self? and while your not running as much boost as what id like to run did you feel a big difference in the performance of the old girl?(im assuming yours is a factory turbo as well?!)

I havent dynoed my wagon but I have dynoed my ute which is a factory intercooled 4.2td
standard was 63 kw at the wheels
after a 3 inch exhaust no muffler 11 psi and an 1/8 of a turn on the fuel pump it was around 84kws at the wheels.

When I put the exhaust on the wagon it did improve it notacibly. It comes on boost earlier, revved out cleaner, at higher rpm it doesnt seem like it has a cork blocking it! it is a factory turbo. You will definately notice it.

I gave the pump a tweak myself.

dont mean to sound rude but is there any reason you left the boost at 11psi, were you temps getting high or just decided that is enough? can i assume that if you were at 13-15 psi that you would have approx 90-95kws.
i think iv read that 15psi is its max efficienty for the factory turbo and you will need a cooler for that amount of boost.
i dont think i have asked this but is it absolutely necessary to have a dyno tune if you have all the gauges, boost controller, someone who knows about the pump and have access to a A/F meter?

iv also been looking at ba xr6 turbo cooler which can be had on ebay for next to nothing, does anyone have any advice on how they would perform?

well i found a thread on the patrol forum which said that the Scotts Rods exhausts are a good product and the best value for money so il be ordering one probably next week.

also found a FG XR6 cooler which is larger then the BA,BF so im thinking il grab it cos i can get it cheap.
