twin sticks: how do they work

I've always assumed twin sticks work by using one to select 2wd or 4wd, and the other to select either high or low range. Is this correct?

What are the advantages or disadvantages of twin sticks vs standard shifted arrangement?

No front diggety dig with twin sticks alone.

You need a 'rear disconnect' coupler on the rear tailshaft/transfer case and need to be in 4wd to do front digs

Unless, of course, you have an Atlas.....
Then it's one lever for front one for rear, each with low-neutral-high
Then you can dig.

On a hilux transfer you will need to dismember it ... the lockout pin between the 2 rails needs to be removed to enable you to get 2wd low range.

Dana 300's are thin on the ground, unless you know someone with (a good) one. You could pay anywhere from $500-$1000, but then may need a rebuild kit, adaptor, clocking ring, and a twin stick kit. Then add yokes/tailshaft mods etc, you are better off to go an Atlas for a few $ more, which will be stronger with more options in terms of output gearing/ratios.

Cheap and easy to unlock your manual front hubs say for a boat ramp or backing your caravan up a steep drive
If you have a centre diff lock - you also need to lock it with an override switch

That said being able to disconnect the steering axle from the seat and keep it in low helps with maneuverability in tight spots.

Or buy an old G60 Patrol. They came with twin sticks at no extra charge

True, tho as it has same bolt pattern as an Atlas you will need the adapter anyway, the clocking ring can be done by just drilling & tapping new holes just where you want them & the twin sticks you make yourself they are easy as cause I made mine
It's only really if you want/need any upgraded internals or outputs that the price starts to go up & unless your running decent HP (V8) that won't be required.

You don't really need twin sticks to give ya self low range two wheel drive. You can do it by just taking out the locking pin and use a standard lever. The only problem is knowing what gear you are in. It can get confusing but can be done...... Just heaps of practice
