Alternator not Charging

Post by Baja Burley »

I have recently changed to a holden 85amp unit of a V6 in my MQ patrol and it is not charging.. I thought there may be an issue with the 'signal wires' (the small ones that turn the alternator on so to speak) so I ran them both to the battery and it worked for a while but after having it disconnected to wire it properly I cannot get the Alt to charge again. I have tried running the direct wires and still no results.. Are these alternators internally regulated?

Baja probally is, are there any part numbers on the side of the alternator.

If its internally regulated, you will have to unplug the regulator on the guard, and put the links in (see patrol 4X4)

You could also just disconnect the external regulator,.

With the internal reg.

One of the small wires will go to the battery (sense)
The other goes to the charge lamp in the cab (L) - you will have to work out which wire this is at the external regulator & run a bypass wire.

Yes, the Commodore Alts are internally regulated. there's a black box on the back of the alt where you plug the signal lamp and excite wire into.. thets the regulator. It has 2 bushes on it which wear down over time and you end up with a poor contact. the part number is "RE60" and almost every spare parts shop should sell them. It's just one idea of why it's not charging :)
YN65 X-Tra cab, 33's, 3" body lift otherwise stock. (the brumby got stolen)
