Rear radiator cooling and legality in QLD?

Have very little room in the front of the lux wih the big 308 in there and need better cooling. As there is no room for a bigger radiator in the front, thought might as well Put a big fark off one on the tray!

1. Is it legal?

2. How will this cool on the highway? I'm thinking a radiator from either newer Holden or ford v8 with monster electric fans.

3. Whats the best way to plumb it? Is another pump required up the back?

mine runs heaps cooler with the radiator in the back. Don't need another pump, think pressure versus volume. can't help you with the legal side but for every other reason i say it's a big yes.

I fixed a hilux with a 350 chev with over heating problems by adding a small radiator from a gemini under the tray. I got a radiator place to mod with 3/8 inlets it so i could run it off the heater circuit in conjunction with the original rad, it worked well.

and FWIW el-au falcon fans seem to be better than the aftermarket gear.

only issue with the falcon radiators is no cap, its on the eggcarton overflow, 60series radiator is a great match for 5lt, i have 2 mates running these with the thermos off the falcon.

Are the 60s rads 2 or 3 core? Could be a goer, cheers for that johnsy.

yeah we just flipped the fans so that the top became the bottom and they lined up great, there massive 3 core

Sweet combo that one. Do you know the rad differs between petrol and diesel models?

I've also heard it can be a bit of a prick bleeding such a large system, how did you do it on your lux mate?

This is a solution to using a falcon radiator without header tank.

Falcon radiator and fan is the best choice unless you already have a 60 radiator. You can pick up a radiator and fan for around $100 each on eBay everyday of the week.

I used the complete AU Falcon radiator & factory twin thermo fan setup as the factory fan shroud was made for that radiator, It was easy to install & worked extremely well on the hwy & in events like the Outback Challenge where you are pushing cars to the limits for long distances off-road. it was in the FATROZA (daihatsu feroza extra cab ute on surf chassis,gu running gear,V6 commy & auto) it was plumbed straight threw to the rear using H/D alloy tube & high pressure heat proof hose for the bends. on the front I used a VR commodore large air conditioning radiater core that we changed the inlet & outlet for the auto oil cooler (the vr commy air cond core is huge & thin, & it filled the whole grill area)
by memory both were around $175 from the wreckers.

Where would you put it? In the back before in/outlet of rad? Or up front on in/out of pump?

Has anyone got the outside dimensions of the falcon radiator including tanks?
All I can find is the core size.

those remote fillers can be found in all sorts of sizes and some have mesh inserts too.
In the GQ I was running the falcon style header tank setup on a custom radiator with an ali header tank mounted up high on the firewall so it was self bleeding, it worked well once I got the bleed pipe for the thermostat housing at the right gradient. I'll see if I can find photos.

Running an air bleed OVER the top of the car form the highest point of the thgine is the easiest way to get the air out. use a very high quality pipe or hose because it is quite vulnerable and can be dangerous if it bursts.

I'd just use the first one I linked up with an EF or AU radiator though. Run your supply and return to your radiator inlet and outlets as normal so the pipes/hoses can run under the car or wherever you want them. Then plumb the new filler neck to the header tank port on the radiator which will be about 24mm. That way you just need to run 1 hose up higher than the radiator (which will be your highest point) using 1" heater hose and it doesn't need to be very long. Change out the 3/4" fitting on the filler neck to a 1" fitting like this: http://www.frozenboost.com/product_info ... 21f6791e74" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; and connect your hose. I'd then just cap the other port on the filler neck and call it done.

Yeah I get the plumbing of the main hoses but it's this bleeder stuff that's confusing me a bit! I need to draw it and look at it and get back to you... So from the header port on the radiator it then goes to the filler cap, then where does it go out the other side of the cap assembly? Please excuse my noobness.. It's been a big day

Actually, scrap that remote filler neck idea because I completely forgot you still need a header tank for expansion, not just a bleed/fill point. For some reason I was thinking about this as a second radiator install and relying on the overflow bottle up the front. To be clear, I have never had to remote mount a radiator before but this is how I would do it. If anyone can see a flaw with this I am all rears.

You need to run a hose as described above to a header tank higher than the top of the radiator. Either a stock falcon one or a custom made one like the one I have used in this fully hectic mspaint drawing I have prepared for your perusal. If you can alloy tig, you can make one of these cheap. Weld on filler necks are available on ebay for under $30 so you can use a rated rad cap.
