Seized shocks?

Post by nayto »

Anyone ever had a seized shock absorber? I pulled one off recently to change the bushes and it is totally seized, even standing on it I can't get it to compress (or extend). Seems odd since I didn't notice any harshness or anything when driving before this? It's an Efs elite.

I have struck quite a few siezed struts in WRX/STI's at work and the only notacible differance was a knocking noise. The ride wasn't much different. Customers only have mentioned noise

I've bent quite a few mcpherson struts, the bind up a bit until they flog the seals out then everything goes really loose and bouncy.
I've also dented a monotube shock. you sure felt that.

check for dents and shaft straightness,

A couple small dents on the outer shell, but nothing major, also rod seems straight too. Once I get a new one fitted I'll take to it with a grinder and see what went wrong inside.

 Probably not the best idea, I'm all for the Darwin awards and the theory of evolution but since youve made it public about your actions someone has to warn you about the risks of what your about to do. Just put it down to it being and old shock and throw it it the bin.
