TD42 rattle

Post by hokey »

hey guys,

just bought a gq with the 4.2 diesel.

had a clutch fan that was locked on solid and used to scream its head off at revs. i've removed that and now i've discovered a rattle between 2200ish to about 3500 or maybe more bit hard to tell.

it only seems to be evident under light throttle and if i put my foot down it goes away.

i've also just serviced it (fuel and oil filters) and wondering if it has anything to do with that. (yes it does have plenty of oil in it :P )

its done 520,000kms but the head would have had to been off at some stage as it has the exhaust side tapped for the water line thingos to help with cracking etc. hopefully a cheap diesel wagon doesn't turn into an expensive one!

cheers

If its bad like someone has a big hammer in there its possibly big end or little end or cracked piston/skirt . This is pretty obvious due to its loud noise and does happen on the throttle conditions you mention.

yeh only just noticeable in the cab driving along freeway but pretty obvious when you're under the bonnet just revving it. hopefully can take it to a diesel mech tomorrow for them to have a look at.

I reckon it would be pretty normal. Have you owned a diesel before?

Sounds like fuel knock, probably normal but worth asking the questions
Also, If the oil spec isnt correct as per the manufacturer then it can sometimes make them a bit noisier too

See how you go

Is fuel rattle really bad for the motor? Just like a stuffed injector or something?

All diesels have fuel rattle morseso when cold.
It can be exageratted if the injectors or pump are worn or the timing is incorrect.
Fuel quality can have a direct bearing on this rattle too.
This rattle wont damage your engine if it is normal.

In your engine you would expect some wear and as such you may also be hearing piston slap or valve train noise.
Or maybe something else such as an exhaust vibration or harmonic on some other component such as bullbar roller fairlead.
If you get it checked out it will give you some peace of mind
