ZD30 safe EGTs
ZD30 safe EGTs
Just popped an EGT guage on soma ZD30 Patrol, under a reasonably heavy load for about 2 mins it got up to 565 deg centigarde or 1050 deg F.
Is this a safe range for the motor?
Cheers

Re: ZD30 safe EGTs
Thats a bit on the hot side for a ZD30.
We normaly back it off when we get to around 500c.
Mine sits on around 400c towing a 1700kg (empty - no fuel or gear) boat at 100kph. I do have NADS and a Cross Country intercooler so my temps are lower than factory.

Re: ZD30 safe EGTs
Bugger, it's not my car but those temps were reached at only 2 mins of towing style load.
This car has an aftermarket PWR intercooler too.
It runs at 10psi boost easily and will peak at 15 psi. is this too much?
EDIT: Just thought I should add that the EGT probe is only 3 inches max from the turbo outlet.

Re: ZD30 safe EGTs
We tune the ZD30s to get 6psi @ 1500, 10psi @ 2000 and 16psi @ 3600.
This gives us a linear boost curve and reduces overall EGT temps because the boost is stable and does not dip like Nissan set it to do.
Here is an article written by one of the gurus at Patrol4x4 on installing dawes & needle valves.

As for the EGT probe. We normally put them 50mm from the turbo flange. According to our surveys on p4x4. 3" is ok but it is harder to install because that part is on the curve of the dump pipe. You would notice a big difference at the bottom of the dump pipe.

Re: ZD30 safe EGTs
Is the PWR cooler the same size as OEM or is it larger?

Re: ZD30 safe EGTs
Not sure really. it doesn't look particularly big though and the standard engine cover sits on it ok.Skegbudley wrote:Is the PWR cooler the same size as OEM or is it larger?

Re: ZD30 safe EGTs
I am certainly interested to hear there egts of such especially the more standard setups and how the egts cmpare with the old 4.2s in cruiser and patrols having paid more attention to such in recent times and turbo fits. I would shudder to think what mine (3L) sits at being driven fairly well full tilt most places jumping gears in the auto on the hiway.. Especially with my last one going... Booom.... Would be very interesting to fit however but its under warranty and is a work car

Re: ZD30 safe EGTs
That sounds like a standard intercooler that has had the core replaced with a PWR core. Yes it would be slightly better than OEM but not by much.Struth wrote:Not sure really. it doesn't look particularly big though and the standard engine cover sits on it ok.Skegbudley wrote:Is the PWR cooler the same size as OEM or is it larger?

My personal opinion is that if it still fits under the OEM shroud then it is too small. ( If you are chasing better performance)
CC & OEM intercooler
The CC intercooler also has a large fan underneath so it works at low speed too.

Re: ZD30 safe EGTs
I have a 2000 model zd30di
Dawes and needle valve , 3" system , ase cooler and fan,
Towing a tandem trailer with 1.5tonne of firewood my max egts @ 110km where 450degrees
Around town doesn't pass 270degrees
Mines set at 18psi but with boost to come on early

Re: ZD30 safe EGTs
Skegbudley, it is just that standard IC with larger core.
Flexen-Gu, they sound like the figures I would expect.
My FIL has a D22 navara with no IC and Steinbauer chip, it cruises at 110 kmh on 400 deg C and around town stays below 300 Deg C.
I have told the owner of the original car to go get it checked out at a diesel tuners as his temps are too much on the high side.
Cheers.

Re: ZD30 safe EGTs
Holy wowzers 565 degrees post turbo? Anyone has it a guess at the preturbo temps? 700 degrees?
I don't know a great deal about diesels, other then how to remove them, and even less about the zd30, but i would have thought that would have been right up there for what i'm assuming is esentually a 'stock' zd30?

Re: ZD30 safe EGTs
Yeah Drakan69, 565 is pretty hot for a diesel.
One of the issues with the ZD30 was it getting too hot and killing pistons as a result. Propper boost control using a Dawes valve fixes this issue.
