Just wondering what parts are best used to put power steering into an FJ 45.

There is also the option of keeping the 45 column in it using a bush in the bottom of the column tube. You'll have to search for the link. There was 2 threads on it, one was in the build up section from memory.

That would be easier for sure, it all got a little bit complicated when I thought I needed a 55 steering column as per the thread.

The mod is easy enough to do on your own on a weekend once you have all the bits together.. I think one of those threads mention a chassis plate kit from Buds customs.. this saves a bit of hassle.
Also note there are two bolt patterns for the 60s steering box.. I haven't been able to find any info about when it changed but one has the bolt holes square , the other has one side slightly offset to the other.. If you get the box or a mounting kit, make sure you get the right pattern for the missing bit..

Whats the problem with the 55 column? I used one in mine and a 75 intermediate shaft. I made a large <-> small spline uni to go between the 55 column and 75 intermediate from bits from a 80 rag joint and another joint. This eliminates the 80 rag joint and is IMHO much betterer!

Yeh mate that was what I meant, 55s are few and far between. The job is for a customer, old fella I help out so unless it can be done fairly cheap he wont be able to afford it, which means I have to know exactly how to do it so it doeasn't cost too much in time.

It can be done easier and cheaper. Don't use a 40/45 PS box, the idler arm setup is shit.
Get a 60 or 80 series box and make some frame plates with crush tubes. Bubs sells the plates pre fabbed - http://www.budscustoms.com.au/product.asp?ProductID=929" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

You can run a stock 45 PS pulley, bracket and pump if you can find it. It'd be easier to get a falcon pump, fab a bracket and get a longer serpentine belt.
You'll need the lines and mod em to suit. Hilux/surf high pressure fitting fits the falcon pump. The pump and box are easily rebuilt but mightn't be necessary.
Could do it for $500.

I think you've missed a vital point. It is illegal to weld steering components. If it's a trailer queen or a farm truck then welding bits in is the obvious solution and if done properly will outlast the car. If you want the car to be road legal and more so if you want a mod plate for the power steer conversion then unfortunately it's simply not an option.

I do have an IFS lux steering box and pump, the car runs a 302 so has vee belts, but I have converted an IFS lux pump to vee pulley before.
I may have to look at these items as well, pretty sure the 60 steering box has the pitman arm facing rearward same as the IFS unit.

Apparently its also not a good idea to rebuild the type of steering uni pictured. Its a staked joint and removing the bearings removes the stakes. The local drive line shop wanted nothing to do with building a uni for me after I told them its for steering parts, so I did it myself and re-staked them in different locations. Has not been an issue. Its gotta be better than welding anyway..
