1hdt rebuild or replace

Hi guys, i've skullked around here for a while sucking up info and humor.... now i need to rustle up some advice.
I've got an 80 series with a 1hdt, just ticked past 500k, and number 4 piston is in pieces, presumed from a stuck injector flooding the cylinder. head hasn't come off yet so don't know how far the damage has spread but atleast no leg out of bed.
So my options seem to be, import engine with low kays (100k), reco'd engine, wreckers or rebuild mine.
Logic and reliability says rebuild mine, but whether thats the most economical option (still trying to convince the boss that it's a valid investment)
and would anyone be able to suggest an engine builder around brissy?

I can't tell you any rebuilders, but if you get a replacement engine i might be interested in your old one and fuel pump. I've been thinking about getting one like this to learn how to pull one down and rebuild it just for interest's sake.

Let me know howyou go, i can offer you better than the scrap metal value for sure.

I might add that unless you are doing the work yourself, a rebuild of that nature is going to cost a packet. It's bad enough for the labour cost of a mild rebuild but when yóu're talking farked pistons, possibly con rods and even more then you're talking big parts dollars too.

rebuild yours, 500k's in pretty damn good, i know a fair few 1hdt that dont get past 200k's.
use stronger pistons, the head is meant to be pretty strong..
flow the head, if you can afford it, get it breathe better, more go.
did you religiously do the BEB regularly? or use a high calcium content in the oil? to get a decent life out of the engine.?

im thinking of the 12ht or the 1hdt for mine.
parts are easier to chase with the 1hdt but not the longevity, from previous engines ive known.

Yep, rebuild is my favoured prefference and gaining any improvements (within economical reason) I can.
Now I'm starting to consider doing it myself... I can turn a spanner but have never contemplated something this major. Will still have to get someone to do the head and any other major parts but can hopefully save a dollar.

assembly is really a minor part of a rebuild

i got my 2H fully rebuilt with injectors done and new exedy clutch by Cobby's Engine Rebuilts on northside about 6 years ago, injector pump didnt need work. And it went great after the rebuild, felt like a new car although i stopped driving the car about 12months later when i bought my 100series.

how did you manage to get the big km's out of the engine?

Check and chance BEB every 100K, regular oil services, dont treat the engine like shit = 500+ K

I only inherited it 20k ago but in the time I've known it religious oil and filters. Hopefully I don't go broke rebuilding it so I can enjoy some more of it

You'll be looking at upwards of 2k in parts alone, plus any machining, head rebuild etc that you farm out.

These engines are big and everything is farkin HEAVY! So eat your wheaties.

Ive read about a few 1HD-T with oil consumption issues after a rebuild.
Do your home work, get a Toyota engine manual (online if you search)
