253 in a FJ40
Im about to pick up a FJ40 with a petrol 4.2. It comes withh aholden 253. would this be a better set up as its the same size moter. I would like the sound of a V8 but just dont know if iys worth the effort?

I wouldn't bother with a 253, for all the effort and $$ you'd get better bang for your buck with an injected 5litre or chev V8.

dont waste your money on the 253. Sell it to a mate for a boat anchor and with the money u get from that u can buy a happy meal and be happy!

Thanks thats what i thought. The conversion kit it comes with would fit a 308 i would assume?
Is the origanal toyota 4.2 as bad as every one tells me?
Would it be thirster than a V8?

Conversion kit may or may not be any good. Some 308 had a chev bolt pattern for the bellhousing. All 253 and most 308 had trimatic bolt pattern.funloven wrote:Thanks thats what i thought. The conversion kit it comes with would fit a 308 i would assume?

That's a bit harsh. many moons ago, in my teens, a bloke who was a mate and now works for Victor Bray as pit crew had an LX torana with a 253 that revved to 7500rpm. If the car didn't have head rests it would have snapped your neck. Conceded that it wouldn't suit a heavy car, so I would go bigger in a cruiser.crankycruiser wrote:dont waste your money on the 253. I had a 253 fj40 25 years ago. I had a 253 because there were no issues with rego like bigger motors. It had enough power that you could make the front tyres come of the ground when changing from 1st to 2nd. It had a great rev range and didn't seem to mind 7000rpm for long periods. It also ran the speedo off the gauge.
253's are a great little motor and for me it worked very well in my 40. Plus anything is better then a F motor.

everything is there ready to bolt in aperantly so it wouldnt cost much to put it in.
Is a mod plate very expensive,dificult?

Nothing wrong with running the 253, they rev hard and are heaps of fun, my cooks 253 will drag my 5ltr off on the beach all day. Parts are cheap and easy to source. The conversion is really easy and should only take a day or so depending on your know how. Do you know what type of conversion kit you have as that may be we're you come unstuck

Do some research into power and torque curves, compare the two and decide where you're going to need your power? do you want to cruise at 120km's/h or climb a mountain? in saying that, diff ratios and tyre size are going to affect this aswell.

Well i got my 40 and love it. I havnt picked up the 253 and conversion kit yet will hopfully in the next couple of weeeks. As far as doing 120 in the forty! wITH STEERING AND BREAKS LIKE IT HAS ITS A FULL TIME JOB KEEPING IT ON THE ROAD AT 100.
