MY 05 3LT GU WENT BANG, $10K TO FIX

Post by pigletracing »

My 05 3lt GU tourer/work display car went bang yesterday. Nissan said "OH,yes that is common for 3lt motors. Basicly anything over 140,000klm you get is a bonus  ." And that is for all 3lt Patrols NEW & OLD. The common rail didn't fix the big bang theory  . A New long motor from nissan at my trade cost is $7000, by the time you add up instrumentals, re-fits ect I will be looking at around $10k to get another safe/worry free 140,000 klm.
This is happening that frequently that Nissan Australia are out of stock nationally & cant keep up with the demand, the new shipment will arrive in about 4ish weeks but that could blow out to 6 weeks.
My GU had 245,879klm on the clock when it went bang. There was no warning, or any sighns that it was going to go bang. I just lost all power & couldnt see anything out of the back except white smoke.
I have looked at going down the track of a V8 petty but my budget is only $10k & being a rep on the road it would be too thirsty.
I have also looked at the 4.2TD conversion , but finding a good one & then converting it to the nissan auto is over $10k as well.
if you have a 3lt you might want to put some penny's away for just such an occasion.

cheers piggy

What blew on your motor? I find it hard to believe that the whole motor is faarked.

What the guys at Nissan said is crap. They are talking out their asses.
"Basicly anything over 140,000klm you get is a bonus " - This is probally the biggest load of crap I have read in ages. The 4.2 drivers don't even believe this.

I already know that you don't have any monitoring or protection fitted to your engine. Bog stock and flogged on large tyres can be a recipe for disaster if not monitored. The fact that you have had 2 intercoolers die on you would indicate there was a problem that you did not fix before you blew the engine.

If Nissan don't know what the issue was then take it to someone that does. Just saying replace the engine is a cop out.

As for the CRDs going bang. More crap. I bet you cant find 1 example of a CRD grenading.

Not good news and as we all know way to common. Atleast nissan admitted there was a prob with mine they said i was the first and i nearly choked..

My 06 went bang at 105 000 kms ? was that an answer to the question skeg?, same thing no warning and 4 lanes dissappeared in white smoke :D Bill was 12k ... i argued out of warranty for good will and just had to pay 2k labour but yours is well out of warranty!

Is good that there is some diehard 3L fans out there :D not good for them but just good for variety and laughs :drinking:

There maybe be no other financial option apart from putting a new grenade in by the sounds then keep for 100 000 kms then sell !

No warranty = no 3L IMHO

Sorry to hear of its death.... nissan creating sales for themselves if nothing else.

pigletracing,

Sorry to hear about another dead 3lt, did you have any form of NADS set up on your wagon?

I have a 2006 3lt wagon that I'm going to be ripping the donk out of in the next month to fit up TD42TI if you are looking for a quick fix. The engine has only done 113000km and has been serviced every 5000km and has had dual stage dawes/needle valve set up fir the last 60000km,

I have got it advertised in the classifieds if you want any more info

Let me know if I can help

I know this is no help, but this is why I paid $28k for a 2000 model 4.2 turbo GU when there were 3.0 around for half that.

My 3litre was also rebuilt under warranty mines a 2000. Goes alright its gets driven hard and so far holds up mint. I knew all the issues when buying it but know of several early ones going well over 300,000 trouble free.

Not sure if you wanted advise on what to do but this is what I have done in the past to a couple

Usually only one piston fails, so to replace the whole engine is a bit of an over kill.

Unless you can do it your self, get it to a reputably mechanic and pull the engine. Only remove head and the four piston, hones bores and fit four new piston and rings and throw the head back on. If you wanna save cash you can just change the failed one but 3XETI2GP6M24Sbe sure the other three do not have developing cracks. If you are planning to keep the car for a while I would suggest getting the crowns ceramic coated along with doing NADS ( Nissan anti detonation system) Google for more info. This should stop it from happening again.

I would expect $1000 to 1200 to R&R engine, no more and no more than $2000 in parts and labor to replace four pistons with rings( after market).
Ceramic coating add anther $300.
So all up ,worse case $3500 plus the NADS which you should do even if you get a long block

Or sell the car as is for 10k - 12k

Hope this helps
