ideas on the new project?

Post by buggy man »

Hey guys, at the moment there is some spare space in the shed, and we all know that means its time for another project... So give me some ideas ..
Conditions are ..
1. Must be achievable
2. Must be cheap to source the donor car / cars.
3. In the end must be engineer able

I'm just after some ideas for a hardcore wheeler.. so throw them at me I'm open to anything..

Okay well I have narrowed down a few different projects..
A rocky with lux diffs, 3l turbo diesel and Manuel box and probably chop it into more of a Ute and fit 35's 4 link rear with spoa up front using lux springs..
A g60 patrol with a lot of body chops and modifications, probably update everything..
Or the good old coiled lux..
Atm I'm going with the rocky, its pritty unique, light weight, small enough, and solid axles and turbo diesel! I don't think there is a downside haha
If anyone has opinions or suggestions please don't hesitate to post.

Are you interested in the end product, or the process of building it?

If you're after the end product, then instead of a Rocky, consider a Pajero J-Top with 2.8td. The drivetrain is well proven, good rear LSD (or airlocker available) and there have been a number of SAS'd Pajeros built, so you're not likely to run into insurmountable problems.

A 2" body lift will go in pretty easily, which should get you 35s. It's already a soft-top, so it's almost a ute already.

If the 2.8td isn't gutsy enough, the 3.2DiD is essentially the same block (should swap in easily) - I think they're up to 147kW now?

Well I'm wanting a bit of both, I really want something I can say I 'built' I don't want an 'off the shelf' car like a lux on 35's or a gq.. so something unique is the aim..
The pajero idea does sound okay, does anyone have any pics of similar cars?

Luxy on 60 series diffs with 80 series 3 link front and rear. Disc brake conversion to the rear with caliper handbrake (not drum in disc).
You'll get a wider stance from the 60 diffs and a well balanced suspension sytem from using 3 link f and r.

Shave the diffs (you can take over 1" out and shave the top of the housing so it clears the chassis (if its and IFS chassis) and allows for more up travel or lower suspension height.

Just a suggestion, not 100% sure what you want the car to do or how wild you ant to go.

Or a KIA Sportage with 4" lift and some barwork.

well the luxy idea does sound good, kias are not my thing lol and neather are landrovers.
I can get a 90's dual cab lux body chassis and various pieces for free.. but do i start a new project or just mod my lux?
i think a new project would be good in the fact that i wouldnt necissarly be rushing to get it done as in the mean time i would still have my lux.. and i know what mistakes i made with this lux so the new one would be much better..
definantly some food for thought, but would i be better off with custom links? i supose a factory setup would be much easier to get engineered in NSW?

Links aren't too hard to get engineered but the thing is to consult a engineer before you start and find out what he'll pass otherwise you'll do things twice.
If hilux you could look at a 4runner/ surf coil rear end which is easy as to put in and works great. Or if bigger diffs are wanted you could go 60-80 cruiser diffs. Depends on the tracks you want to drive and how hard you want to push it.

My hilux is holding up to 37" sticky trep's on lux diffs so if built right they are ok, plus hilux everything is cheap and all mods are tried n tested, so no re-inventing the wheel.

Have a look at my build up info n picks of my lux in members section (brad 93hilux) if you are interested
