Re: Ls1 into fzj80 auto conversion plus fuel economy
Any sort of conversion is going to cost money. If you want it to be reliable then it will have to be done properly - no short cuts, which costs more money. Generally, anyone putting an LS engine into their car aren't looking for economy, they want power! If you produce more power then you will consume more fuel but for an LS conversion you can look at achieving slightly better fuel consumption under normal driving conditions than with the old 1FZ-FE.
If you want to get more power be prepared to pay for it. If not, then just replace your donk with another one in better condition (I have one for sale if you like )
Heaps of people have done this conversion try having a search, like: MUD000, killalux, crankycruiser, me, to name a few.
You can only plan so well, probably the biggest thing i did that could have kept cost down is to buy stuff as i needed it. Don't try and buy everything hoping that it will fit then find out later it doesn't and have to make it or buy something different.
if you go down the road of an LS i kept all my drawings/dimensions of bracket etc that i made - you are welcome to look over them.

Thanks I have done a few engine conversions I did want to just do a 1hz-turbo conversion but the auto is different and a few other things but I don't know what I want to do I don't have millions to spend on this conversion

Re: Ls1 into fzj80 auto conversion plus fuel economy
A LS1 with a maffless will get a lot better economy than the 1fz (around 15-17/100 on 35's) and have enough stonk to keep most ppl happy.
Do it properly for sure, it will cost a tad extra but will be worth it, DONT NOT skimp on the cooling kit and try and run thermos, its a waste of time and effort.
If u buy the kit then its pretty straight forwards, I pulled my 1fz out on a thurs night and had the LS in and running on the sun morning.
mine cost me around 7-8k inc motor for every thing and doing everything cept the exhaust myself (i paid 2.5k for my motor , it came with box, fully clubby exhaust and front end, by the time i sold the bits i didnt need the motor itself only owed me $800)
As for the auto, if u want to run the commy auto and it to be reliable, expect to spend 5-10k making it strong enough. i love autos, but personally i wouldnt run the commy auto as it will just ad too much cost if u are trying to do it on the cheap and the 1f manual box is pretty tough (mine done 350k now days and still going well)
Edit: re read your post and i think u want to run the cruiser auto? if so probably a good way to go, but last i heard they still couldnt get the cruiser auto to shift properly with the LS (hopefully things have changed now as it was a while ago.)

Re: Ls1 into fzj80 auto conversion plus fuel economy
Do you want more power or are you happy with the 1fz? There are plenty of gains to be had in the 1fz esp with the auto. Easliy match the fuel economy figures Crank quoted. Much more performance potential in an LS without boosting though? How much power do you want?
Get it on the dyno with a shop that knows their petrol stuff, my old 80 would toast 2uz's with the microtech and tune, i'm talking car lengths, standard exhuast. Play with the shitty shift patterns and times on the 1fz and you could have a real weapon. There used to be a guy on here called autocraft. His 80 was supercharged but he was a wealth of knowledge on the 1fz tuning wise. I am considering putting the microtech back to work on the 105 but it's getting 17l 100ks about the same as the old mans AWD klugger luxury and I know I won't be able to stop with just the microtech.
Conversion is a lot of work, if you can do yourself then ok but I would be going an LS2 all day. LS1 is old hat now.

Re: Ls1 into fzj80 auto conversion plus fuel economy
I would be using the a442 landcruiser autO from my fzj I don't want 1000hp as it is my Dailey driver and it tows my winch truck around so I do want some grunt I can expect it to be a bit thirsty towing but I'm flat out getting 400ks per tank to mostly hiway driving on 33s I have put an exhaust and extractors on it k&n filter it's got the normal accessories like draws rear bar and bullbar roof rack and I can't get over 400k per 95l of fuel

Re: Ls1 into fzj80 auto conversion plus fuel economy
An old guy in Sydney has a 100 series running the ls2 with the Toyota auto. He took it to Bullit (they do v8 swaps for Mazdas i think) and the only way they could get it to work was to run the Toyota ecm and bcm (ie: fit all the sensors from the Toyota v8 to the gm v8. It worked well but was being choked by the stock, roughly 80mm, throttle body. His tab came to close to 50k by the time they got the thing sorted but they spent a lot of time on it before deciding to do what they did.
If you want auto then i would suggest using a 4l**e/6l**e.

Depending where and what driving style that doesn't sound that bad. Considering you are towing a trailer with a comp car and most likely using 4th at wide open throttle 25l/100 is pretty good.
As cranky said, DO NOT skip out on the cooling especially if being used as a tow car. Maybe even consider using the iron block 5.4? better heat retention than that of their alloy counterparts. Thermo fans are great and i have been really impressed by the painless performance dual fan controller kit - have a look. Take your time to seal the gaps up around the shrouding too.

Re: Ls1 into fzj80 auto conversion plus fuel economy
Jeez im glad i read this! I have the 4.5 100 series and same as you i struggle to get 400kms from a tank of unleaded. Mine runs LPG as well and ill be lucky to get 300 out of a 90L LPG tank. Them figures drop to roughly 200-250 kms when i tow the 40, with unleaded. Less of course with LPG.
Everyone loves a 40!

Re: Ls1 into fzj80 auto conversion plus fuel economy
Something must be wrong there. My old 80 would do bang on 20l per 100 highway / city it didn't seem to bother it. The 105 is getting 450ks out of the main before the fuel light comes on.scottmcguinness172 wrote:25l per 100ks is empty I get about 200ks per tank towing
But back to the OP if your towing maybe a LS is the way to go.

Re: Ls1 into fzj80 auto conversion plus fuel economy
I think an ls1 with the 4l60e or ls2 with the 6l80e is the way to go.
A good tuner can then setup the computer and all the auto's shifting patters from the LS1 ECU.
mating to the toyota auto is possible, especially if yours is the non electronic, but is it worth all the headaches.

Re: Ls1 into fzj80 auto conversion plus fuel economy
If the price is right LS2 is the way to go. Although it's been a while since I had street cars I think they are getting 270kw ish out of a Mafless tune these days which would be more than enough. I bought a supercharged VXSS (LS1) from a proceeds of crime sale once it was 400+++kw and I didn't want to put it on the lot

Re: Ls1 into fzj80 auto conversion plus fuel economy
If your auto is the earlier hydraulic gearbox you shouldn't have any issues getting it to work. On the other hand, if it's electronic, it'll be pretty hard without a stand alone computer for the gearbox. I use the Compu-Shift in mine and it works perfectly. The best part is you can put in any engine you like and the gearbox will work without issue. You can also change the shift speed to suit the specific engine's power and torque and how you like to drive.

Re: Ls1 into fzj80 auto conversion plus fuel economy
On economy i had the 1FZ-FE 5 speed and did the auto conversion as well, when i did my engine conversion. fuel consumption went from 420km per tank (average 78ltrs per fill) to 450kms. consistently, city driving.
Cheers.
