Unregistered Sierra complications

I've read similar older posts about this scenario - buying from interstate and all the complications but here's my story...

I recently bought a '95 Sierra for what I considered a good price - interstate (bought in Vic, drove to NSW). Drove it back across the border and made it home. Around 1000kms. The motor is good, as is the interior and the body - very little rust. All in all I'm happy with the buy ($2000). But, I was aware and prepared to spend maybe another 2K getting it up to speed so to speak.

The main mod that needs to be de-modded is the suspension and steering. I got looks all the way up it so high. Anyway, my main concern is to get it registered and so severe adjustments need to be made.

Here's my concern - I do want to to do a moderate lift (after rego if necessary) but nothing that would attract the attention of the local constabulary. For that I will need to change the wheels - currently 31", then fix the steering which has some illegal welding done ... don't ask. BTW turning circle right now is about 300 metres ; )…. well a lot anyway.


Given that I want it to pass rego then have some mod done I want to do this with the least extra expense. If I buy a lift kit it will include steering 'extras' and shocks. I don't have any pre-purchase parts that can be refitted temporarily to get me passed, so it looks like I either have to buy stock wheels and tyres and steering to get registered then get mods done and sell stock stuff again. BTW I'm not doing the work myself. Anyone had this predicament and maybe suggest a workaround better than the above?

2" suspension lift is legal, do this then a body lift later once it has been registered. get a set of stock tyres from a wreckers.

You would be surprised how cheap you can "legally" get a zuk lifted. Have a read of the link below.

Also where exactly are you? There are a lot of people that could help you with a few parts if we know where you are.

hey man, I had a simular sort of prob in melbourne, brought a 1.6 turbo holden drover (just a new badge for a sierra) from qld it Had a body lift suspension lift and once I got to melb I found out the motor that was in it was a different number to the one on the paper work. your best bet is to jst take the body lift out n get some cheap tires from a wrecker. jst pray you dont do what I did and blow your diff and snap your rear driveshaft on the way home from the RTA!

If it was me. I'd just get that steering cleaned up and fixed. And get it standard as u can. It just makes passing a blue slip easyer. Even try using some primer and sub frame black (from super cheep) and paint your diffs and wot ever else underneath. Get it regoed. Then go to town on your suspension.

Why not look to get it engineered as is? Even if its not legal a good engineer should be able to provide guidance on the best way to go about getting it road worthy. Good luck and congrats on picking up the zook!

where about are you? im in western sydney and might have a lead on some std tyres and suspension, one of my house mates has some and might be interested in moving it on.
