Has anyone used this diesel engine rebuilder?
Hi
I'm reserching engine rebuilders. I have a 75 series troopy with the old 2H in it. I'm looking at rebuilding the 2H with bigger bearings and conrods and putting a turbo on it.
I got talking to the bloke from APA Diesel in Sydney and he seems to know his stuff.
My question is has anyone used them before and if you have do you recommend them?
Your feedback would be appreciated, their website is http://www.apade.com.au/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Thanks Jim

Havent heard of them. If your going to keep it a long, long time go for it. But if your just rebuilding it to turbo it, don't waste your money. The 2H is great motor standard and takes to a Turbo better than the later model non turbo Toyota engines. Mine makes just over 100rwhp which is more than a 12ht, standard everything. A couple of members here have done pumps and internals and only been dissapointed. Before I had mine done people tried to sell me rebuilds with teflon pistons, big rods etc, but you can only lean on a 2H to about 200hp max with intercooling and you don't need internals to do it as the pump maxes out anyway. If you want to chase hp go a 12HT and contact 'custom turbos' a member on here from memory he was talking 150rwhp with one of his turbos.

Re: Has anyone used this diesel engine rebuilder?
spend that coin on a 12ht!
keep an eye on ebay or buy a complete vehicle for around 8g.
i rebuilt my 2h, regret it ever since.
12ht better on fuel, plenty of power and torque.
but ita your money.
their was a 75 troopy on ebay recently 8300, not in the best nick visual but had some gear, spare parts and it had the 12ht in it.
didnt sell.

Thanks guys for your replies.
I do plan on keeping the troopy for ever SCANAS and worst case I can take the motor out and put it in something else.
Old mate from APA Diesel quoted me $8000 for the rebuild, turbo and new cooling system. so with and exhust and clutch I'll be able to get all done for $10000.
I know the 2H is no race motor and I don't expect it to be, and I have no complaints off road as it is, it has plenty of torque. But the oil pressure has dropped and it runs hot every now and then which makes me think the seals are getting tired. Plus I tow a camper now and would like some more power up hills.

Re: Has anyone used this diesel engine rebuilder?
Surely for 10K you would be better off doing a motor conversion eg 12HT as suggested, rather than a rebuild + turbo?
Grow some balls.
That is all.
That is all.
Re: Has anyone used this diesel engine rebuilder?
I guess it's better to have a rebuilt 2H with new turbo gear than a tired 12Ht with unknown condition motor, turbo injectors pump etc.

Re: Has anyone used this diesel engine rebuilder?
wow
for 8-10k you could buy a complete 100series 1HDFTE wreck, sell off at least $2k worth of shit your not going to use, sell your 2H as a boat anchor, and have 155kw instead of 75kw(2H) 100kw (12HT)
hell for 15k i bet you can get a drive in/out 1HDFTE conversion done

I looked hard at a 1hd conversion B4 I went turbo. Your figures are spot on shadow about 8-10k fitted even looked at a couple of motors that where piles of leaking poo. As my 60 had been rebuilt just B4 i got it I choose to go all new turbo gear knowing that every belt, hose, welsh plug, gasket, injector, turbo, lines, head gasket, sump gasket, thermostat, radiator etc etc where Brand Spanking new or less than 2 years old, Whereas buying a used 1hd of unknown condition and quality good have been great but could have just as easliy turned into a money pit if it needed a new turbo or pump or injectors or radiator in the near future.
I doubt they could do a rebuld and turbo for $8k I suspect they would hit you up for a few things once it's open and it would blow out.
If it was me i'd find a 12Ht for simplicty for around $4000 and spend $4000 doing some tidy ups, new pistons, rings, bearing, welch plugs, gaskets, maybe a turbo rebuild... Shit typing that I think it would go over $4000

Re: Has anyone used this diesel engine rebuilder?
I agree SCANAS.
I am leaning towards reliability as we travel in alot of remote places.
Plus the 1HDFTE has to much electrics for my liking, I have mates that have had them and agree they are good while they work but are painfull when they don't.
If I was going to transplant a motor it would probably be a 1HDT, but even with that I'd have to swap everything in the engine bay to the opposite side, and like SCANAS said I would have a 2nd hand motor in unknown condition!

Re: Has anyone used this diesel engine rebuilder?
They really don't have that many electronics when you compare them to a 1HD-t for instance. A 12HT can run with zero electrics pretty much lolJimbo75 wrote:I agree SCANAS.

they have an electronic injector pump and an ECU for it and ofcourse all the electrical sensors that communicate with the ECU. if you look at a 1HDFTE engine harness youl see its really not the electrical nightmate people think they are
Im sure killa customs can make a plug and play engine harness for you.
Most of the electronics in the 100 are not engine related.
I've had my car through several over-bonnet water crossings and many tyre high crossings and have never had a single electrical problem in this truck, in fact i had more electrical problems in my hj60! but age was the issue there I think.

Once youve driven a 12HT powered vehicle, jump in a 100series 1hdfte, youl be amazed. They have torque all the way through the rev range and just cant be matched by any of the previous toyo diesels.
There's a small amount of lag, then the 5 speed auto just pulls like freight train from 0-100 almost seamlessly and wants to keep going.

I think he is talking about a 2H which can run without a battery for or alternator once started.Shadow wrote:They really don't have that many electronics when you compare them to a 1HD-t for instance. A 12HT can run with zero electrics pretty much lolJimbo75 wrote:I agree SCANAS.

Talk to Jason at Total Care 4WD at Seven Hills. He put a 1HD-FTE into my 80 series about 5 years ago and I've never looked back.
