the thrust bearing in my clutch has been squeeking for the last few months, i got quoted $1800 to get it changed at a fourby shop, i thought that was a bit expensive so im going to have a crack at changing it myself, is there any special tools or ways of making the job easier? could i do it by myself or is it better with another person?

Many hands make light work, a hoist and a gearbox jack would make it 10x easier too.

How old is the clutch?
I'd be changing it for all the work involved, clutches average $450 for a good one.
To change out just bearing just need screw drivers, socket set, ratchet spanners and a rattle gun makes it easier.
Other thing to consider is while your in there to pull off clutch and flywheel and change spigot bearing and rear main seal. It's easy to do and seal and bearing would cost less then $50 for both.
Keep in mind it's a lot of work to get gearbox off JUST to change a clutch bearing.
Get a repair manual from Repco or the like for step to step instructions and torque settings.
The last time I did it I changed gearbox by myself (without assistance) and it was easy enough. One main tip to get top bolts is to let the gearbox drop and to have motor rest against firewall which will give u enough room to get to top bolts on bell housing from underneath of car.
And remove transfer off gearbox otherwise it's too heavy/ awkward to line up spigot on input shaft into back of motor.
With a few tools you will be ok doing it yourself.. $1800.. Tell him his dreaming

Cheers brad ill have to go and find the bearing and seal im sure my local shop will have them. Yes i will be changing the clutch aswell just tossing up between exedy safari

Definitely excedy.
I used sports tuff and still going strong on a 3.0L EFI diesel with a turbo running 14Lb of boost and now on 37" sticky trep's..
I've heard good things about the Excedy sports tuff and Excedy safari tuff..

i run the Safari Sports Clutch and it handles a turbo 3L thats off its head. And i can sit there and dump the clutch and it just hooks up and takes off. only reason i didnt go safari tuff is they had none in stock.
