Hilux rear diff conversion? XJ Cherokee

Post by MattDrinan »

Has anyone ever considered/ heard of swapping the D35 diff with a Hilux diff?

Pros I can see: Cheap + plentiful
Centred pumpkin
Lots of diff ratios (including factory 4.11:1 which is available for D30. Saves regearing both diffs)
Strong
Lockers etc readily available
SPOA configuration already

Cons: Stud pattern different to Jeep
Driveshaft yoke needs to be changed
Wide enough? (read that they're not far off the D35 width)
Not a Jeep part!

Seems doable to me. I have find very little information about it though so any advice/ opinions would be great! Matt

It's definitely a decent upgrade over the 35c. Follow this link and about half way down you will see toyota axles into jeeps. http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/jeep-har ... hread.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Have you tried to find a tj Dana 44? A more common upgrade and been done a thousand times.

That's good to hear about the 2wd stud pattern :)

Ive only browsed gumtree and ebay for Dana 44's but have yet to see one. I also figured they'd be pretty dear seeing as the wranglers are really sought after.

If I could get a hilux axle with 4.11 gears and the right stud pattern I could just regear the front end to suit. Hilux diffs are cheap :)

Have you got a budget on this upgrade. Is your 35 broken or are you upgrading for bigger tyres/harder wheeling.

To be honest i wasnt planning on doing this upgrade anytime too soon as ive only just got my Jeep and have other things i'd like to do first. I posted up the question just to see if anyone knew anything about this conversion and to throw it out there.

It was something I was considering with mine until It got written off.
I was going to go front and rear though and go to 6 stud so Rims were more readily available.

Some xj's came with a Chrysler 8 3/4" rear which is much stronger then the standard D35c junk. Have a ring around at wreckers, speak to the guys at 4wdUSA in Perth, or look on the Ausjeep Offroad forum, someone may have one.
or swap it for a TJ D44 rear.

Let me know if you want a copy.

Putting Toy parts in a Jeep will slow it down. D35 diffs are a dime a dozen.
