They go bang. Costs lots of $$$$$$ to fix. Small motor in a big truck=stressed motor, get the mighty TD42 and it will be reliable as.
Grow some balls.

That is all.

The early ones had issues. 2000 - 2002.
From 2003 onwards they fixed most of the issues.
These days with NADS we don't tend to worry about grenading.

what is your old girl going to do with this car? if she is only going to take the kids to school and park on the grass at cricket on saturday morning then it will be fine. as said before, the early ones had problems, but nissan has seemed to have fixed them (though i do still hear the odd story of a newer one going bang). if its for heavier towing/ hard offroad road work with lift, mods, etc, then i'd probably look at a td42t or even a tb48 if you can handle the fuel bill!!!!

A friends 3.0 pooped its dual mass flyheel/clutch two weeks ago.
She was very impressed with the repair bill. Had the car back one week.
She (as at Wednesday) is now even more impressed that it appears to have shat the standard head/piston/turbo.

They are a POS that should have never been released with that motor.

So what was it?
A head, a piston, a turbo or just a random guess?

As for the clutch. When has this only been a ZD30 powered issue?

Seeing as other patrols dont have shite dual mass flywheels its a 3.0 issue.

I dunno. She said it lost power, barely runs, sounds terrible, and lots of white smoke.
Id say its any one of the three. Or all.

I don't ever recall anyone having a Patrol axle and wheel part company with their vehicle. Are you sure that it was not just the wheel that came off? (a well known and documented fault caused by people not doing up the wheel nuts correctly)

As for the horse float. Generaly caused by bad weight distrubution and driver error. Nothing to do with ZD30s either.h

I usto tow my 16ft boat through the dunes in WA working it pretty hard and also do heaps of bush work. I ran 35s and all the crap everyday. Bought it with 110k sold it with 270k. We had GUs for work cars from about 2005 onwards. Granted, we only had them until 100K on the clock, but in that time we didnt have any issues on any of the 4 vehicles apart from worn front shock and tie rod bushes. And they were hard on tyres. Fuel economy was pretty hows it going, but you'll find that with the 4.2 as well. And we carried a roof rack with the aerodynamics of a parachute.

At the risk of sounding like Bogged and upsetting Skeg who will defend them to the death.....

I know people who own 3.0's and regularly beat the hell out of them, run 35's, yada yada.

But I know 3 people personally who have had their early 3.0's implode.
I also have 2 clients who retired, went on the big trip to have the vehicle fail during their travels.
Vince GU05 on the Pootrol forum had his 2005 3.0 shit itself on a desert trip I was on.
I know a parts manager at a large Melb Nissan dealer who regularly sells new/replacement/rebuild kits and components for post 04/05 3.0 motors. He says more than 10 per year. Thats just one dealership.

Sure, plenty of them last the distance. Plenty dont.
My words.

Your money. :)

One of my business partners picked up a series 3 3.0 last year.
The dual mass flywheel died earlier this year, and the inter cooler also split, and has been replaced with a cross country unit.
Neither of these issues occur on any other patrol model, obviously.

wheels fall off toyotas aswell... ive had it on a new hilux at work and a 79 series.... someone had overtensioned and stripped the threads both time and with alloy wheels 1 loose can be all it takes to vibrate and flex to loosen all the others till they snap or fall off..

its $50 to buy a torque wrench from supashit or ripco and then you can check them when you wash the car or check the oil once a week/fortnight/month whenever you do any sort of maintenance? I know i have a front left nut that is stripped as it tightens EVERY time i check the nuts (once a fortnight while checking oil, filling wipers etc.) so i can monitor this problem till i have time to get a new stud.
turbos are nice but i'd rather be blown

Nissan said it was bad fuel, but all my fuel comes strait from the service truck and no other vehicles or machines went down. We were having a pretty high fuel turnover at the time too, like 50,000L a week, so i doubt it was fuel. I believe it to be the ZD30 heavy breathing leading to a dirty MAF, in turn leading to to much fuel and boost, which in turn leads to my wallet bleeding and me now driviung a BT50, which kicks the shit out of the Nissan in every way.

All in all its a shitty engine. It has no place dragging 5T+ around. As a work ute, the only thing a patrol has going for it....... cheaper than a cruiser

Cheers
Dave
