Tyre/Wheel Sizes for HJ61

Post by PeterInSa »

The plate on my Vehicle saya I can run 265/75/15 these tyres have a load rating of 112, The problem is 265/75/15 are getting very scarce, very few seem to be importing them.

Tyre guy suggests going to 265/70/16 similar height ,these tyres are more readily available. Have you got anything legal that can support this?

The 60 series had a 16inch spit rim with the wheel only 5.5 from memory, my 15 wheels are 8 inch.

Any other supplies of 265/75/15 out there?

Thanks

From the way I read the rules regarding tyre fitment, both the diametre and width are limited by the largest stock fitment tyre on the vehicle.

My 1985 FJ62 has 3 sizes on the tyre decal, 31x10.50R15 on 15x7 rim, 205R16 on 16x6, or 7.50R16 on 16x5.5 rim. I wouldnt think a HJ61 would be any different, although I dont have the 265/75R15 (or is that just metric equivalent of 10.50x31R15?

Anyway, the tallest tyre is the 7.50 which from what I can find is equivalent to a 32" tyre, and the widest is the 10.50, which is equivalent (just under by a couple mm) to a 265. So a 265/75 R16 should have the same height and width as the maximum option tyres, but is bigger than both ;)

Also according to the Australia wide rules I found on the NT website, you are allowed 50mm diametre and 25 width over largest standard size tyre.

Check with local authorities, but I dont think you could be done for going slightly larger with tyres. You should still be able to get 31x10.50 if you cant find the 265/75 though.
The old Luxy was fun, but with a young family comes great responsibility.
So I swapped it for a 60. Should be able to take the whole mob camping, plus I got an extra gear, 2 less cylinders and A/C.

Hi Ryan,
I want to go to a 265/70/16 which to me is the equivalent height to a 265/75/15, the 31/10.5/15 only has a load rating of 109 so is not any good.

Really bizarre, the placard on mine says the 31s are the highest load rating of all the available, but I know the 7.50 are really.

What year is yours? obviously the tyre specs are different, dunno why.

Hi Again,
Just spoke to the RTA in SA I can fit the 265/70/16 providing they are only 15mm more ( diam) than the 265/75/15, and they have the same load rating ie 112.

Problem is some 70/16 are 20mm more than the 75/15 which is NBG and some 75/15 are the same diam as the 75/16 according to the manufacturers Specs. But the latter do not count as the Bible is the Australian Tyre and Rim manual, so will need to check this.Do not know the Tyre Rim Diam of the 16/5.50 Rims

Will do a Web search of the 75/15 and the 70/16 for the Bible

Could not look up the Bible But this site suggest I should be OK,
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tiretech/ ... ?techid=53" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

It goes up in 1/2 inches and 15mm is more than 1/2 inch so should be OK, B4 I do anything will check with an Engineer. Will try to get the 75/15 B4 the wheel changeover.

I run 235/85/16 (metric eq of 750r/16 ) readily available and relatively cheap to buy. I am currently running pirelli scorpions doing the same sort of driving you describe. they do the job well.

Yes mate, stock 60 chrome split rims. I also have the same size tyres on a set of 7" wide sunrasia rims.
