80 transfer front output seal with 2in body lift?

Post by Brenton »

Hey guys i was wondering if anyone had changed the 80 series (part time, manual) front output seal while leaving the transfer still attached to the gearbox, I heard its pretty hard to do with the stock body height but would the 2in body lift make it possible to get to the two hard too reach bolts. I don't have the car to check over its broken down quite far from me atm. I have a spare front output housing I was going to take up with me and swap it over to make the car drivable. The current seal is just pouring out, am I dreaming? cheers brenton

been a while since I done one in an 80, but we do that type of transfer a fair bit (also in HDJ troopys and utes) getting to the bolts isnt the hard bit, pressing the front shaft out to access the seal, pressing it back in and then reinstalling the front extension to the transfer is hard than getting the bolts, if you have a reasonable socket set.
The old Luxy was fun, but with a young family comes great responsibility.
So I swapped it for a 60. Should be able to take the whole mob camping, plus I got an extra gear, 2 less cylinders and A/C.

that's good to hear, i have a spare front housing here with me that im going to replace the seal and bearing and take that up with me. so it should be all doable when i get up there then. the pressing/pulling of the parts made me grab the spare housing to fix up down here first, looks like that was the best plan. thanks mate

Just did this on mine with Navi's father on Saturday. I only have a once inch body lift. Easy to do, just watch out for the detent ball and spring as you pull the front housing off . We left the entire cross member, etc in place. The hardest part as perviously identified was pressing out the gears and bearings and reintalling them.
Cheers,
