Dana 70 Diff's / F350 Diff's (V8 Diesel Superduty)

Post by VooDoo »

I managed to score a pair of Diff's from a 06 Ford F350 (8 stud) but cant really find a lot of info on them. Im led to believe they are a Dana 70 (leaf spring front and rear setup). I know there is a lot of demand for the dana 60 diff's but what are these like for strength. Looking at putting them behind a LS1/Atlas setup.

Can you find the casting no.s?

The Dana bible on pirate will be able to tell you everything you want to know.

Is it DRW or SRW?

Kp or ball stud?

FF or SF?

The rear will be a Ford/sterling rear . There will be a ford badge on the housing around the centre somewhere...
Front is a Dana 60, 35 spline axles both front and rear, ball joint knuckles
Get the numbers of them and can tell you more abou them

its SRW
No idea if its FF or SF or how to check it externally.

The rear does have a Ford logo in the casting

if it has a ford badge, its a Ford 70 rear.. big strong
front without numbers could be a dana 50 or 60.. if you cant find the ID tag on the housings (tag bolted to the diff cover) you will have to measure the crown wheel diameter.

There will be tags on the diff like this... A number starting with 60xxxx-x or 61xxxx-x this is the number that will tell you everything..

But those tags say there most but not if the front is a 50 or 60....

OK, done more research

The front (248) is definately a 60 or 61. The rear a 70. Ratio is 3.73 (not ideal but i can live with that) Rear has an electronic plug on it which im assuming is some sort of diff lock. Front hubs are vacuum operated. Ill give it a cleanup tomorrow and see if i can find any more info.

Now looking at which transfer case to use behind a LS1/4L60e combo. Will likely use The spare Jeep chassis i have and 4 link the diff's, hydro steer etc. Atlas sounds good but big $$$. Any other recommendations? NP205? Patrol ?

I thought mine was a 60 or 61 also until I found the numbers and then found out it was a Dana 50... Then I cut and shut a 60 centre into it..
As for ratios there cheap as... Just becareful as there is 2 different centres on the 60.. From memory 4.8 and down and 4.8 and up..
The plug you are talking about on the rear is on the top of the centre right ??? If it is its the ABS sensor..

FWIW almost ANY axle that is a full float will have studs on the axle flanges that hold the axle to the hub. I.E. if you undo the axle studs the axle comes out and the hub is still retained by the bearing nuts.

Semi floats will just have the wheel lugs and that's it.

Here is a better shot of the rear. It clearly has DANA on the top in the casting as well as ford on one side. DANA stickers as per pic's with numbers pointing at DANA 70 parts

Same rear diff as mine and its a ford 70... See the tag under the bolts. On the cap what are they... Unless you pull the housing off to axles out you won't know if its a 60 or 50 front.. If the front axle tapper down to 30 spline it's a 50 if they stay at 35 spline it's a 60

The guys in the US seem convinced the rear is a sterling 10.5"

They are pretty convinced the front is a 60 as they stopped using the 50 in 2002 and these are both 2005 diff's. Also the ring gear is 9.76" where the 50 is 9"

Either way they will still suit my purpose. i'm not trying to win TT but just want a tough social wheeler/buggy. Looking at one of Superiors goatbuilt frames, LS1, Atlas.

Either way they will both be more than strong enough in standard form for what you want.

If you can get them cheap enough why not?
