12mm bolt Panhard rubber bush. Rare...?

Post by bushy555 »

All,

First post in well over a year on Outers...

Did a few searches on here, and nothing came back with what I was after.
Have on and off over two days done rather a lot of googling and came back with not much.

Issue: Rubber bushes in the panhard of my old girl use a 12mm bolt.
After extensive searching and asking blokes running ebay shops and on-line shops, both in this country as well as in the UK, all 14 something of them have all come back saying they only have 14mm bushes. Never heard of a 12mm bush. ...and then I'm going "what the heck.....?"
So then thinking I've stoofed up, I goes and measure the shaft diameter of the bolts again, as well as the bolt holes. Definitely are 12mm and not 14mm. A bolt with a shaft diameter of 14mm will physically not fit in the panhard mounts on the chassis or diff end, let alone the actual existing rubber bush in the panhard.
I reckon I'm going loopy. I bought a pair of these bushes about six years ago without a drama and changed them. Thinking that "yeah they'll be all the same" , went and bough tthe wrong size (14mm for a Defender). Got no idea where I got them from, otherwise I wouldn't be posting this, begging for some advise or help or whatever it is that I am asking.

Old girl is a hybrid of a '93 Defender, '84 Rangie and a '87 VM diesel Rangie. She is another bitsa.

Anyone know what the Rangie part number of a panhard rubber bush is that uses a 12mm bolt?

....Or am I just better off drilling out the 12mm bolt holes, on the chassis/diff, to 14mm and using a more normal common bush?

Cheers for any info.

I think what you will find is the early Rangies ran a 12mm and the later Rangies went to a 14mm. I Had the same problem on mine.
Mines a 73 model 2 door rangie and it had the 12mm bushs, I got new ones and they were 14mm. I used the 14mm bushs and 12mm bolt but the bush flogged out obviously.
I spoke to a few guys and no one new what i was on about until i spoke to British Off Road at Sunnt Coast. They set me straight.
I ended up drilling the bolt holes out to 14mm and running the bigger bush and using original Land Rover bushs as they last longer..

My Feb '85 One Ten has the 12mm Panhard bolt too, give them an earlier VIN or at least year and they'll find it. I've had genuine and Superpro bushes that suit but can't recall part numbers sorry.

Correct me ifi am wrong, but I also beleive the later14mm bushes are slightly larger OD?

I seem to recall having my old outcast panhard honed out to fit the largerOD when I changed to the14mm bolt on the rangie.
I do have some spare bushes to compare but they are at home about 2000km away, won't be back to check until after the 16th.

Ta Grimace.

Quote from B.O.R. for 2x bushes, 2x new nuts and bolts, was $80 delivered.
I went 'freakin ouch'. Ain't spending that much.

Finally found another mob $30 delivered for split blue poly rubbish that will stuff up before the genuine rubber.
Power steering leaks like a sieve, so it may actually out last if I were to replace rubber there....
Old girl has done 2000 klicks in the past four years, so it should last a little while anyway.

Thanks for the offer; but keep it. No doubt you'll find someone else, or even yourself, wanting one sometime down the track.
The split poly's were for a pre-85, and, guess what. They were for a 14mm bolt! Another wasted $40.
Finally got on to http://www.landrovers.com.au" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; and they have them for $5.50 each. Delivered and were in last Thursday arvo.

Poly is better for the panhard than rubber, most rovers leak oil onto them so the rubber deteriorates.
I would not use poly bushes any where else.
Saddle up tonto, its the not so loanrangie! . 98 TDI DISCO lightly modded with more to come.
