gday fellas,
new to this site, hoping someone may have a bit of knowledge and can give me some pointers when setting up the links in my new build.
I'm building a 40 series buggy with MOG404 portals on 9" housings. the diffs are about done and I'm doing my homework on calculating my links.
what i need to find out is how much separation do you need to overcome the extra levering force from the portal?
if anyone has any info it would be greatly appreciated.
Lawri.

Well the answer is simple but not so easy on the solution. To overcome the extra leverage you would need to add the same distance that the portals add. As for solutions well it depends on a lot of different factors. What tyres are you running? What packaging constraints do you have IE. Suspension, chassis and what sort of driving etc. I've seen the upper mounts extended to help and I've also seen the lowers mount off a brace that goes to the bottom of the portal hub. Everything is a compromise.

Minimum 12" link separation I believe...
Re: help, triangulated 4 link with portals
cheers tough nut & jack,
were a bouts did you get this info jack? or is this commonly known?
12" should be fairly easy to make work in my application.
does anyone els have anything worth noting in regard to linking diffs with portal hubs? is there any other factors worth noting?
cheers

Hi Mog
I don't know where the general rule comes from for the seperation factor but one way to look at it is that the portal gearing multiplies the torque at the wheels/links before you even add in the leverage factor. So i would use that ratio to increase the seperation.
E.G. 1.5:1 in the portals = 1.5x the torque seen at the diff housing and ergo the links. So if a normal separation was 8" i'd make it 12"
