Quick Intro and Problems
Quick Intro and Problems
Hi Guys,
My name is Andrew...obviously. I recently purchased my first 4wd, which is a 92 GQ SWB Diesel. I am happy with the car, and to say that I am new to 4wding, the car seems to be keeping me out of too much trouble.
I was wondering if anyone can comment on any of the questions I have below.
I have a couple of questions about the Transfer Case on my GQ, it is a Series 2, so has the Chain Driven Transfer.
Problem 1 - The Transfer Case is leaking, and seems to come between the main seal of the case, where the 2 largest parts seal together. It only drips out, but seems to come out more when the car is under stress, like driving through soft sand. There is not much leaking, I checked it after refilling it after one month, and was still up to the correct level, but the main problem seems to be that when driving it is spitting the oil onto the muffler, and starts burning off, creating a terrible smell...
Has anyone had a similar leak on a GQ, and knows how much approx it would cost and how much work is involved?
Problem 2 - I have a problem sometimes not being able to shift the transfer into 4L, this can happen when I stop on a hill, go to select it and sometimes cant get it in. Then I can spin the wheels and then shift it in easily, this is not a huge problem, and happens only rarely, but im worried that it could eventually stop, and I would be stuck in a certain mode. Anyone know if this is more likely to be the case itself, or the lever mechanism
Any comments on either of the problems would be greatly appreciated....
Cheers

Thought about this, is it possible to overtighten them though? I dont have a Tourque Wrench or anything, and didn't want to go and fully tighten them, may be worth a try though, I have the Gregorys manual, and it probably states the correct tension. May give it a go and see what happens, nothing to lose....maybe
Andrew great choise of car as to the transfer case i just stripped mine to install low range gears and if the rear and center section seal is leaking its a easy fix to remove and re seal. about not being able to change to low if the transfercase is loaded up ie your on a hill in high and wanting to change to low you may have to roll back and take the strain of the drive train to get it to engage just my two cents worth if you want some info on any thing drop me a line or call round im in rockingham and have a ramp you can test your rig on if you like also no a couple of other guys with GQ shortys that will blow your mind
Great, thanks for the info.
Am waiting a price on the Oil leak fix, so will be interesting to see. Yeh, its weird with the case shift, but like you said, just getting it moving again seems to release any stress and fix the problem. I encountered it once before where I was bogged on a hill (from very poor driving) and turned off the car, then jumped back in and couldn't change to low, so just spun the wheels in high, then managed to shift it in easy. I guess I just want to reasure myself that it is not a sigb of the Transfer case on its way out.
Cheers

Just got a rough price on oil leak fix, if it is the centre seal, will be about $450-$500, front or rear seal about $120, and one of the other seals is about $350.
In regards to problems shifting case, could be selector or case, If they had to strip the case to check for parts, looking at about $2000
But may just get the selector checked out as it is not causing me any major problems, and I can usually select the gear that I want, but jus moving the wheels a little.
Cheers

Whilst talking about Transfer Case, I forgot to mention I refilled it with Dexron 3, which is what the castrol guide states for this model. Nissan suggested using Matic-D, which is about twice the price.
What do other people use in the Transfer Case, Dexron or Matic-D??
Have you seen an improvement with either?

With trans fer leak, just tightren the bolts tight.
If leaking thru the small slot underneath then its either is a seal between transfer and extn housing.
What oil is leaking, trans fer oil or gearbox?
You can remove transfer easily from underneath by unbolting from gearbox.
Linkages do sieze a bit usually on bottom joint. Ensure grease in lower boot.
When changeing into low and it wont go in with clutch depressed, just let it out a bit and back in.
Dont go spinning your wheels.

I think it is leaking from the small slot underneath, and the oil is Red, ie Dexron 3. I have seen a darker oil, but from memory this was before I changed the oil in the case.

This is to make the shift easier right??? Just normal auto grease, and just grease all the moving joints around the linkages???

Ok will try next time it happens. Any comment on the use of Matic-D vs Dexron3?
Cheers for the advice
Im sure the Gregories manual shows standard gear oil not auto box oil this may be stuffing it up if its leaking out of the small slot between the trans and gear box check the color for which oil to dismantle the transfer case is easy do it your self just need a bering pullar dont pay some one else learn about yopur car and do it your self
Before you go spending money on your transfer case i would suggest checking out how much a replacement from the wreckers, or elsewhere, might cost you. Might be much cheaper than opening yours. i have heard and seen them bought and sold for $150 privately. You would have a good chance of not having any problems as from what i have heard very few GQ transfers seem to have any problems, except yours
Good luck

agree with ya there... cheaper to source an alternative transfer and bolt it up. and put some low range gearing in it while you're at it.

It does, but notes that for Series 2, use Dexron 3, as it is a Chain Driven Transfer Case.
With regards to the hard shifting, im just gonna leave it, I starting to think that its not actually a problem, I tested it out this morning after it was sitting all night, couldn't go to LOW, so just retired by letting clutch go first and went straight in. I agree, theres no way im gonna spend anywhere near $2000 for it, as you said, you can get second hand ones from wreckers etc for much cheaper.
Cheers for the replies

Ive got a 92 series 2 car and run gear oil it runs fine what color was the oil you took out .Just a thought were the transfer case input hub and the gearbox output shaft come together there is a bung like a core plug that has selent aroud it by running lighter fluid it may be getting past then running out between the 2 mating surfaces .

Oil that came out was dark, like gear oil, or maybe very dirty Dexron?
I just assumed that they had maybe used the wring oil....
Gregories manual states that should use Dexron,
Castrol Webiste suggests Dexron III,
Penrite Webiste does not differ between Series 1 or 2 and suggests Gear Oil,
Valvoline suggests Auto Transmission Fluid,
And Nissan Dealership suggests Matic-D, which is their own Auto Fluid.
