Rear Diff Swap

Post by RUMBOZZ »

Hi all, I'm just about to start putting in my hub spacers on my LN106. And this weekend I will be starting to look for a new read diff to mach the size of the new front, what I'm wanting to know is what diff do i use.

I know it needs to be out of an IFS hilux, but can it be out of any of them? ie.. Can it be from the start of the IFS right till the new ones?

I also have an air locker in my rear diff, will this bolt into the IFS diff housing?

Thanks for any help
Chris

Your ln106 rear diff will bolt into the ifs housing without mods, negating the need for different flanges (and im 99% sure they are the same anyway).

Up to 03 is what I would use, they are 1.5inches wider than stock, after 03 they are wider again.

Hey Chris, all the comments above are dead right, I just thought I'd say it a bit simpler.

All diffs are measured in WMS to WMS, which is Wheel Mount Surface to Wheel Mount Surface which is the mounting face that has your wheel studs and your rim sits hard against.

Your std diff will be 1400mm WMS to WMS - all Hilux with a solid front axle 1979-1997
All IFS trucks from 1984-2004 are 1475mm WMS to WMS - this is the one you want
2005 onwards IFS trucks are 1600mm WMS to WMS - too wide for a conventional widetrack, although it is cool as it's what I've done.

So if you are doing a widetrack conversion using IFS hubs and the widetrack kit or 1.5" wheel spacers then you need the rear diff out of any 1984-2004 IFS Hilux/Surf/4Runner etc.
The only basic difference between them is coil or leaf but the leaf ones bolt right up.

As for the Air-Locker. Yep the whole diff centre will be straight plug and play. No need to worry about anything including tailshaft as mentioned above as it already matches your tailshaft in the car now.

Hope that helps.
