yep there's an artform in bogging and it takes a lot of practise to get right
Most people think that the visible dent is all that needs filling, sadly the panel around the dent will also be slightly deformed aswell and so it needs to be filled aswell
a few basic tips:
grind off the paint around the area to be bogged because bog doesn't stick to paint and it will leave those dreaded bog rings
Don't lump the bog into the dent only, you'll get a better result if the bog extends well past the dented area
(for example: a golfball dent would need a layer of bog atleast the size of you open hand if not more
)
don't be frightened to add several layers and build the bogged area up slowly, thinner layers of bog will be easier to apply, and will give you a better finish each layer.... one big lump of bog is difficult to get right when your learning
use a long board with 36grit paper to do the initial blocking back
use a sanding block with 180grit paper to finish off the bog work
once you hit the steel that's under the bog STOP SANDING, you've gone too far and need to add more bog
What your 'trying' to do is feather in the bog so its a seamless join
its not hard once you have the basics, its getting the basics right that most don't seem to ever understand
