Hilux Gear box problem??

Post by Saratoga »

G'day Guys, Im a newbie that has no idea about cars and after looking at this site for a while i think you might be able to help.

I have a 89 hilux and when im driving in 5th gear it makes a horrible clicking noise like the wheel of fortune wheel :) I have got no idea what it is, its only in 5th and the faster you go the quicker the click gets. Now i was told that this model had problems with the gear box?

So can someone tell me what the problem is?

Can it be fixed and how much?

Is there anyone in the Southeastern suburbs of Melbourne that people would recommend?

Box probably needs a bearing kit put into it.
Hilux boxs dont have a very strong 5th gear setup and using it should be avoided while towing or heavilly loaded up.

There are 2 different set ups with the hilux 5spd. 5th gear is located with a circlip on one and a nut on the other.

The style with the circlip are bad for 5th gear falling off the back of the shaft. It is usually fixed by removing the box and splitting the cases, refitting the circlip and allthough it sounds dodgy tack welding it in place.

When 5th gear falls off the back of the style with the nut(uncommon) its usually stripped the thread on the end of the shaft and basicaly the same fix applies if this has happened unless you want to spend the $$ to replace the shaft.

I did my g/box last year , needed 5th gear and bottom shaft and bearings.Got the parts off Don Kyatt, West melbourne 0393298200 also at Traralgon 0351765327. I think theyalso do a changeover box for about 1000 bucks. Probably cheapest way out if you need many parts.
Allways been a TOYOTA man.
Now I'm old and grumpy as well.
