Body Swap DOT info.
I now have my new single cab to go on my 4runner chassis.
I need some info from you guys in QLD that have done this before. Either from rolling it or just swapping a different body like I am doing. Just want to know what I have to report to the DOT. Will I just have to give them new body numbers? Or will I have to get them to approve it and get a mod plate?
Any info big or small.

hmm ive been wondering this myself, the thing i found is in nsw, nowhere does it list your body no on your rego, so they would never know if you changed bodies, im not sure if the no. is on the plates havn't checked yet, i plan on putting mine through a full engineers check once i get all the work done.

Yeah you will need a engineers report to change the info on rego papers
That includes body and colour.
I had a series 1 landrover wagon that was blue and turned it into a ute and painted it white, they never picked up on it till I changed the rego over.

Maybe take the rego of it and them re-reg as a ute, DOT are they dumb they wouldn't notice
Agreed.. they are dumb. they just follow policies. Re-registering isnt a bad idea.
Did a v8 swap in my commodore from a six.. which just ran out of rego.. then re-registered it as a v8.

I don't think you need a mod plate if the motor was an option on the orignal car anyway.
But I could be wrong just can't be botherd looking it up

the body number is where you might have trouble. All vechicles have 3 numbers, a chassis, body and engine.
If you got the cab from a wreckers, by law they are required to "write" the vechicle of as soon as they remove parts from it, hence the cab vin is now a writen of vechicle. When you go to re-register/engineer your cab swap this will show up on the transport computers and it is off to the police station, as mentioned about. Once you have aquired the sarogant number it is back to transport where you will go over the pits for a full inspection and must prove where and when you bought all the parts to repair the cab and do the swap. the whole process costs around $600 bucks. If it is a stat write off, sell the cab and cut your losses now. even thou the cab you have isnt damaged and the wreckers may have aquired it as a POS in bad condition over all, if it is in there yard it needs to have some type of write of status.
Also, the cab that you are swapping on must be of the same year as the cab you removed, for easy approval. If not the swap needs to comply with current emmissons of the latest chassis/cab used. If you were to drop an HJ ute cab on to a 100's series chassis, emissions for the 100 must be meet, not the 45.
A hilux cab swap should be pretty straight foward and you shouldnt have any dramas but do be prepared for a couple that might rock the boat.

if they were the same wheel base you could, but the troopy is 10 inch longer so it does require and engineer, the automotive type not a train driver which is stuiped considering it would bolt right on.

If thats the case. How would they see what my dad did to his Pathfinder (it's engineered no problems in NSW) Instead of the hassle of a cab swap, he simply cut the cab across the top of the windscreen, then cut it along the floor just behind the front seats. Then picked up a Navara Cab, cut it in the exact same spots, and then welded it all back together. This way keeping all original numbers, and only taking a day to have it together and and paint touched up, ready to roll.

This is interesting.....
I'm in the process of replacing my chassis on the 1991 Diesel 80 Series landcruiser, current chassis is a write off, i've just purchased a 93 Turbo Diesel chassis. I'm just about to start swapping over.
$600 for a full inspection ?????????

it can be done through a private engineer but i know that DOT charge 600, and this is the reason most wrecking yards will sell a chassis cheap. because your average person cant be bothered with the trouble that it takes to register the truck so they make the price more entertaining and and it becomes a more viable exercise to them.
Im not saying that you will have trouble, but if the wrecking yard has done what they are required to by law then there will be afew little things that are un-expected.

Did you read mine? I was merely making the suggestion of modifying the original cab to a single, not a cab swap, therefore not effecting chassis numbers, and how would they see that? AFter helping doing this, it seems the easier option to go if have access to and can do the cutting and welding.

read from the top, he has a 5 seater the id tag on the fire wall will be plated as a 5 seater, should he cut and shut that aswell?
unless you are a panel beater or handy with a welder your average joe is not capable of doing the modication that you talk about, yes it would be easy to unpic the 2 joins but getting it all back together so the windscreen fits and seals, and the doors like up would be more trouble than it is worth.

Nick a bit more info for you since you seem know a bit.
It is a 84 model single cab. I have an 84 model 4runner. Same year shouldn't be a trouble there.
I bought it private so I don't know the history and if it had been written off.
At the moment I plan to go to Phil at Melva to do the engineering. Since he is in the Logan Club he will hopefully do me a good deal. I want to avoid the DOT if I can. There is a lot of stuff I want to do in the process of swapping the body like dual transfer and moving the front diff forward. So I don't want to take it to the DOT like that. But still want to do the swap legally.

what i said is pointless and wont apply then. there is no way for an individual to write a vechicle off, and both being 84 your laughing.

Actually very few have a body number that is any different to the Chassie number. A Hilux or 4Runner has no Body Number at all only a Chassie Number and then the same Chassie Number on the compliance plate. The body has no coresponding number stamped on it. So in theory if you had a White 84 model single cab and was just changing the cab due to damage or rust and the new cab was also white its as simple as changing the compliance plates as well. However this is not legal but it is common practice with Toyotas.
