Now didn't Ford get the original contract to build a lightweight 4wd vehicle for the US armed forces. After successfully getting the contract and building some the contract was then taken over by Willys Overland and the jeep was born.

Also Meerington harmon (I think that was their name) were making 4wds well before the WWII. So shut up about Jeep being the first 4wd because it is crap. As I said they were probably the first to market them successfully to the civilan market so in the eyes of the public sector they may appear to be the "first".

As to saying I have shit dribbling from my mouth when i said you would be better off to buy a Tj and spend the money on getting aftermarket parts instead of buying a Rubicon. Why is that shit?
The Dana 44s in the Rubicon are basically a hybrid and not as strong or as common as a Dana 44. And the factory mark up on the other components top cover the warranty issues makes the exercise alot more expensive than buying the parts yourself. So go ahead and believe all the marketing babble that Jeep are very good at or you could actually make up your mind about them

Yep Ford won the contract but couldn't supply enough jeeps, so Willys Overland was contracted to supply extra jeeps, using the Ford design. Pretty much the only thing they improved was the manufacture of the grill piece.

To me it really doesn't come down to who was first.

To me a good 4wd is a combination of off road and on road personality.

To me NO other 4wd can give me the freedom and choices of the TJ. If the sun is shinning I can take the roof down, if it's cold I can put a hard top on. If a few of my mates want to go on a HARDCORE 4wd w/e then I can mix it with the best of them and sometimes do it better. I can put some polish on the TJ and she comes up as good as any of the ricers around, and they don't have a convertable.

NO other 4WD manufactuer can boast they have only 4wd's in their line up, Jeep ONLY make 4wd's. No 2wd's like Toyo, Nissian or Ford. Some say that the newer Jeeps arn't "real" 4wd's but look at the amount of plastic and elec gizmos is on most of the newer 4wd's these days.

Really it comes down to respecting each other and having fun.

Well put Lexx, The Jeep is the last of the "true" convertables (doors off screen down) I was pissed with Suzuki when the new Jimny came out with that piss poor excuse for a soft top , I have been driving roof off, doors off for nearly twenty years, it is the only way to go, and when the weather turns, pop on a roof and you are good to go.

I don't however think your "Jeep ONLY make 4wd's" argument works Lexx, these days all the brands are all a bit incestuous, Jeep/Chrysler and I don't know who owns Chrysler at the moment, but you can be sure they are all swapping notes between departments.
I feel it is a bit like me saying that Patrol or Land cruiser only make 4x4's which is bollocks, as they are only brand names or models marketed by the parent co, and while Jeep has been a brand that has been traded left and right over the years, would I be right in saying that they are just another dept of the Chrysler Corp? do we find the sharing of technology between Jeeps and other models in the Chrysler group?
I am not saying this to shitcan the Jeep, but just as all cars are starting to look the same, all the brands are becoming homogenised in an atempt to save $

I think it was Bantam that won the design contract and they were taken over by Willys Overland. They could not build enough so Ford built them aswell.Ford were second in the design comp.

Three companies responded with prototypes Bantam, Willys & Ford.
Willys won the contact, but couldn’t meet the required volume, so the army threw the Willys plans to Ford. Ford then changed their model designnator from GP to GPW.
Bantam was contracted to build trailers.

Id say the answer to what is the best 4wd made would depend on the period. Eg - 50's, 60's, 70's, 80, 90's etc. At different times you would get a different answer. Maybe a range rover was the best 4wd made when it was first released. But not now. In the early 80's it would be hard to go past a BJ42 with factory front disk brakes, factory power steering, optional factory PTO winch, strong 5 speed gearbox, strong transfer, fully floating axles and strong diffs.
