Hilux won't start

Post by Fieldsy »

I am trying to help out one of my friends. She has a 96 Petrol Hilux that has been sitting for a while and won’t start. The odd thing is that when you put the ignition onto “on” a sort of 3 tone alarm starts going off. None of the electricals seem to work bar the temp gauge and I have checked the fuses in the fuse box under the bonnet, all good. It also had no oil in it so I filled that hoping it was some funky Toyota won’t start without oil thing, but no joy. The battery looked stuffed (very low fluid and damaged plates) so I have sent her off to buy a new one. But to be honest I don’t think that is the problem. Or is it? What the hell is this alarm? She says it doesn’t have an immobilizer or an alarm. It has got me stuffed!

yep that is what I was thinking but I have never run into an alarm for that. But then I know stuff all about Hilux's.

The other thing I found out was that at some stage someone has tried to jump start it. and I was thinking that if they did that properly it should have started if it was only the battery. I don't think they would have cooked a puter either because it is my understanding that the Hilux didn't go puterized untill the 97 model.

BTW if the new bat works I will post that it did. May help someone else in the future who has the same prob. I'm cool like that ;)

The noise could be relays.and not enough battery to start

In reference to someone attempting to jump start the hilux, if the battery terminal clamps are dodgy and corroded then they wouldnt be able to jump start it. Try jump starting it by hooking the neg to earth and the pos to the starter. Then if it starts you know its not just the battery but the clamps as well that need attention. I'd use anti-spike jumper leads if you can get your hands on some. As far as the buzzing goes, I have not come accross that before.

My hilux has a buzzer on the fuel filter for when it gets water in it but its no longer connected as i have a cav filter on it. This is on a diesel though so i dont know about a petrol. Some toyotas also have a buzzer when there is no vacuum in the brake booster but i haven't tried this on the hilux.
Allways been a TOYOTA man.
Now I'm old and grumpy as well.

May not help the starting of it but the alarm my be comming from the stereo. I know some have a alarm in them that goes off when someone has tried to remove it without disarming it. Just a though if the noise is coming from the speaker areas???????? :multi:

Yep I thought of this. but for it to shut all the electrics down? sounds excesive to me. but then my gess is that the stez has some security thing on it like you said and the no electrics is unrelated simply a dead batt. but them possibly the dead batt and or the attempt at jumpstarting it is resulting in the alarm.

I supose this is the price you pay for turning up late after others have had a go at fixing something :?

still it's an interesting one
