Aftermarket Air Filters
Aftermarket Air Filters
I am looking at fitting an aftermarket or filter to the GQ and would like to know what is the best filter.
Thinking something along the lines of a foam filter e.g Finer Filter, K&N etc.

K&N are a Cotton based filter which is reusable. From all reports K&N's are superior. I had a finer filter in my Hilux worked great easy to clean re oil no sweat.....

Look at CFM airflow through the different filters. The foam (from ads) flows similar to OE paper when clean but severely restricted when dusty.
K&N flows in excess of OE paper when clean and similar when needing a clean. A mate also runs a K&N in his 91 TD42T GQ patrol, has done for a few years now and loves it. His is a highly tuned Turbo diesel intercooled running 10 or 16 psi with fuel pump mods etc to keep fuelling up at max boost, and he has no airflow problems.

coighty, i reckon it was a bit of overkill to have a main and pre filters.
a lot of guys found that two filters restricted the airflow too much for their turbo'd 4.2's.
i fitted a piece of hose over the centre section of the vertical prefilter to create a water trap, didn't get any water in there anyway.
i had intended to replace the prefilter housing and piping with a hose straight from the snorkel to main filter but sold the truck before it happened.
i drowned the motor on cape york when water leaked into the prefilter housing so i was going to get rid of it.
luckily no damage occured to the motor.
