16" steel rims?

Post by -Scott- »

Hi All

I'm still working on an upgrade to my rubber. I want to go 285/75-16, so I need some 16x8" rims (or 16x7.5 minimum) to fit the Paj. The 16" alloys on gen 2 Pajeros are 16x7.

Being a cheap-skate I'm trying to find second-hand steel rims, and that's as far as I got. Searching the for-sale section here gets only one hit for 16" rims, the Trading Post isn't much better (2 hits for Queensland!)

My friendly Tyre Retailer is quoting $95 for "no-name" white or $115 for ROH white - both with zero offset, or there was a silver rim available with a neg 13 offset (pos 10 is standard.)

Are these beasts really this hard to find these days? Any tips on where else to try? Don't base model Patrols, Prados and Cruisers come standard with 16" steelies? Do people ever trade these in?

Any help appreciated.

I don't know why you wanna go 16" rims :?:
15" are way more common and a lot cheaper.
Even if you can find some 16x7" Paj alloys they won't be cheap.

Why 16s?
If I stick with 15s I still need new rims for 33's.
I can see myself one day hitching up a camper trailer behind the shorty, and I want car and trailer to be running the same wheels and tyres. If/when the day comes that I trade in on a later model it's unlikely to take 15s.
If I go 16s now there is the (remote) possibility to upgrade brakes (should I ever need to replace that much of the drive train :? )
16s seem to be the way more members of the Mitsu club up here are going. I like the idea of being able to share wheels and tyres should the need arise.

Why 15s?
The rims are cheaper.

Bottom line is I'll spend the money for 16s. I don't want to spend more money to do this than I have to.

Cheers,

Scott

Just the predicament i was in a few months ago. I wanted black 16" steelies and they were going to be the same price as alloys. I could not justify $140 for steel rims...

The CSA alloys sell for 150 odd each.

Ok a brake upgrade would be to go the front rotors and calipers from a NL GLS they have 1" bigger rotors thats why Mitsu went to a 16" rim.
The rear discs stayed the same size right up to the NM.

OK, that's more news for me. I had this wierd idea that alloys started over $200 and went up. Maybe my friendly tyre retailer isn't quite so friendly any more... :?

More phone calls to make...

Hi Scott,

unfortunately I haven't found a lot to offer with rims off other makes. Prado steelies are 16x7", they fit Pajeros well but are too narrow. Nissan GU rims are perfect at 16x8" but are expensive because everyone seems to want them, it takes a lot of phone calls to tyre dealers to track down a set, you may have better luck picking them up singly. The going price seems to be $100 to $120 each, but I found one wrecker who wanted $180 each (no sale there!!). Good luck with the search, I will let you know if I hear of any for sale.

Regards

Update:

The CSA Alloys start at $150 more than steel wheels - too much for this cheapskate.

ROH Steel wheels are very popular, and don't sit on shelves - they need to be ordered, approximately 2 weeks in advance. OK, I said, order some! "No - they don't do a zero offset in 16x8" :? I don't want the neg 13 offset, so it looks like I can't get ROH.

So I've ordered some white steel wheels which are imported by Mullins, but come with two coloured pin stripes - probably red and blue, but they can't be certain, I get what arrives. But I want the tyres on for this weekend :D so I'll take my chances.

Anybody want some NJ alloys with 31x10.5 Cooper STs? :D

Cheers,

i know a few running 33s on 15x7 inch rims. Seems not to be a drama (probably illegal though). Id do it.
