diff breathers

how do i remove the caps on the breathers without busting them and where is the best place to run the new breathers to??

Rip em off with plyers... as to where to run them that depends on how much u want to spend on tubing (tubing should be resistant to oil so check price of fuel hose).
One of my mates runs all the breather tubes (2 diffs, t-case & gearbox) to some larger tubing where it is siliconed into one end. then he runs the other end into his snorkel where it goes through the guard and to the top of the snorkel - again the joint is sealed with silicone and the tube is glued to the tope edge inside of the snorkel tube with silicone - looks ugly but works well.
Route the diff breather tubes alongside the brake lines

Probly not but he is the REAL Grandmaster of WAY-Overkill Engineering - Sams not even trying.....
I suppose its cheap insurance too.

goe a garden hose and run it up the chassis rails into engine bay and fix next to air box cheap and easy

never had a problem with it, just make sure the hose is all the way on the diff breather and the hose clamp is done up tight

i just used a big flat screwdriver and popped the caps off

garden hose is the right ID and shouldn't collapse from vacuum

the rear breather i ran up through the floor where the fuel filler is

the front breather i ran up near the brake master cylinder and battery

replaced with heater hose now, much more betterer

still run garden hose to the back diff....zip ties, duct tape and hose clamps can fix anything

I had this idea once that you could put an inflated balloon on the end of the breather to maintain a positive pressure in the diff housings, never got round to it like most other ideas on my zook....

Speaking of pressures, if you plumb the breathers into your snorkel you'll be creating a slight vacuum in the system. Enough to pull water etc past your seals? Dunno. I'd be interested to know if anyone with this setup has had problems.

An airhorn pump may be able to do the same sort of thing .. high volume low pressure, My lux has an airhorn pump on it (ripped the airhorns off it as soon as I owned it) ... Saw a similar setup on an MQ patrol for positive pressure into the Dizzy cap,

i hadf the bright idea on my first zook tostop dust and shit getting in the breathers i put generic fuel filters in the open ends of the hoses, they came handy as spares and if you forgot an air bed adapter when camping they connected perfectly to the pump

Not a bad idea!!!

run a bleed to your bellhousing and t/case while you're at it, you can use airbed pumps too, but they aren't rated for continuous use

might run them all into the one hose using tee pieces and plumb it into the cab under the dash and put a dust filter there.

did the breathers tonight but couldnt find the one for the gearbox?? i know it should be there but it aint. can someone post a pic of its location. think it has been pluged up with a bolt

I got some 12mm airhose from Mitre 10 for about $7 a metre and little hose clamps from cheaper auto for $2.50 .....add a t-piece and a cheapo fuel filter to whack on the end- total cost: $24.00.......
.....and a chunk out of my knuckle from trying bust off those &*^%&% breather caps
Ran them along the chassis rails then up behind the battery - sweet

Fuel filters are good for stills too................

gear box needs to be dropped, and have a hole drilled in the shifter tower and have a barb added to it.
From the factory the breather is just a small pinhole (about 2mm across) You will see oil falling outa it on steep climbs.

that sux. have to pull the box out. nah too much hard work. Youd think being a 4x4 they would put a propper breather on it instead of a stupid sedan pin hole.

hey i have that problem too
i've nearly fixed it though by adding some of that stuff that thickens the oil and makes it stick to the gears, doesn't leak anywhere near as much and the geearbox doesn't get tas hot either



I put my trans casee breather on withouut taking tthe cas out but it was a prick of a job even with a 2" body lift

t'case was easy even without a bodylift just used a shaped piece of old rubber hose and a hose clampall tee'd into the same garden hoseand plumbed into the cab.
