what would you buy a 83 -85 rangie or a 93+ disco.
yep still havin trouble deciding which to get. found a disco its got no rust and has had every logbook service and is 93 mod and have also found a 83 rangie with dual batt and fuel and 5 ltr engine decisions decisions
help me come to a resolution please

what would you buy disco or rangie

If it was for me I would buy a Tdi Disco - and personally I prefer the Disco body shape. But depends what you want to do with it. For the same money as the Disco you would want to get a completely rebuilt RR though.

It also depends on your budget , if you wanted a tourer i would buiy a TDI disco, but if you want an easy to work on and modify off roader then i would go the Rangie . In my opinion a 20 year old Rangie would be a better buy than a 10 year old Disco as far as problems go, unless it was a real bargain and then no doubt it would be a lemon - at least Rangies are fairly cheap to fix and if you are good with your hands it will never have to go to a mechanic. I know some will disagree, but i faced the same dilemma a few years ago and dont regret buying an 85' Rangie.
I also have an 81' Rangie which i have had for 10 years and it has never been to a mechanic and its never let me down, its now a ute.

I drove a few with 308's when I was lookin at rangies and they didn't impress really. A bit heavy and a bit slow

I had a 93 Disco, very dissapointed with it. The seats were awful, dash was also crap and it drove nowhere near as good on-road (found the ride too harsh). Off-road there very capable, but found the roof made the Disco a tad top heavy. Plus I payed quite a bit of money for it (too much) and this took the fun out of owning a Land Rover in the first place
It was a short and misreable ownership of 8 months, but pissed it off and bought a 92 Rangie. Much better, more reliable and have owned it for 3 1/2 years. I'll never sell it, even if I do decide to upgrade, it will still be with me!!
Just my personal experience with both. Plus I HATE diesels, so a V8 will always be my choice, even if petrol get too expensive.

I agree with Trav, i would buy the rangie every time, especially if i was planning on offroad work.

Disco or Rangie
I have presently a 84 series 2 Rangie and a 2000 Deaf Ender Extreme and prviously had a 97 tdi Disco. The Rangie is a great play toy and not a bad tourer, Lacks load room though. The Disco is a good all rounder, great tourer, has more luggage room and seating is much better in the rear for kids. The tdi returns great fuel economy but lacks a little on power. Adjustments to the injector pump increase power a little. If you can stretch and buy a series 2 Disco overall you will be much happier. I still mourn the loss of my Disco. If you are getting a series one Disco try not to pay any more than $11-12k for a good one. A diesel is more practical for remote off road travels as well. That is not to say that I dont love my V8 RR to play with either. An early model RR will always require some work. If you decide on a RR get a 84 series 2 onwards. Probablly just confused you more now hey. If you can get hold of either for a day do so and dive solid for a couple of hours to see what suits you better. If I had had a full day in the Defender I probablly would have bought the Disco TD5. As good as the Defy is it is not a comfortable vehicle to drive long distance and with air con is extremely uncomfortable for the front passenger. Will go anywhere and has s*&t loads of room, but no ergonomics. If LR ever learn and keep the Defender shape but upgrade the dash, air con and seating they would have a top seller. Every body I know who has Toymota's and Missan's loves the drive of the Disco and the size and shape of the Defender, but buy jappy's because there is no in between.

ended up getting a disco 93 have had it for 3 weeks now and no probs yet (knock on wood ) sold my rangie to my bro so it stays in the family. the missus drives it most of the time but i love jumpin in it after work and taken her for a run ( the car that is)
its a 3.5 injected v8 i think it has more pull then my rangie did. when i bought it it cost me $8500 and the shocks were shot so i put in some new koni's she drives great they are a few little things that need some looking into like brakes but thats about all
the bloke i bought it off said he never took it off road which i thought was great. am going to test it off road soon
