Measuring camshaft lift

Post by Tooheys »

Ive got a holden 308 blue motor that has shattered a valve spring on no.7 cylinder, i ripped the heads off and took them to repco at eagle farm where they told me that the springs were obviously wrong for the amount of camshaft lift. The problem is i dont know the specs of the cam so is it possible to measure the lift with a dial guage by putting it on a lifter and rotating the engine by hand?? Otherwise ill have to pull it out which id rather not do because in the workshop manual i have it is pretty vague on pulling a camshaft out and it says something about removing a dampner with a dampner remover????

thanks in advance

Hi Tooheys
To do it accuratly you need a solid cylinder the diameter of a lifter but with out the hydralics.
The dampner is the harmonic balancer / front pulley.
Someone who degrees in camshafts in chevs/holdens could help you with this,do you know any one who builds race engines.

You wont need a solid lifter , just make sure the dial indicator is sitting on the outer edge of the lifter . You also need to know your rocker ratio to work this out .

Are you in Melbourne ?

Ok well i've been told the rockers are yella terra roller rockers and they have 1.65 stamped into the top of them, i presume this is the ratio?? JTop i dont know anyone that builds race engines but i know two diesel mechanics problem is they live to far away to come over after work and one of them works night shift. So if i know the rocker ratio and get a measurement off the cam whats the maths that gives me the lift so i know what spec of spring to order?? If i do have to pull it out is it easy to remove the harmonic balancer with standard tools?
