bending gq manual shifters

i'm gona need to bend my shifters when i do my body lift, how do i go about doing it? my thoughts were to take the shifter out and then oxy and bend it, but how do i take the shifters out? ive seen it done b4, but didn't get to see how the actual shifter was removed....

is this right?

Ive done a few body lifts without ever bending the shifters.
Just relieve the metal around the edge of the boot,
On the transfer lever slot back the lower boot also and ensure low pulls up into the slot on the detent bar.

On a couple the transfer wouldnt go back far enough so on those 2 I hacksawed a slot into the transfer lever above the pivot, bent lever forward and put a tack of weld on cut.
I have also had to use a smaller knob on a couple of transfer levers to stop them hitting console at front. I used Hilux ones.

Cut a small V shape around the floor pan where the shifters are (check the 4x4 shifter as well as the gearshift)

i was hoping not to cut the shifters, and also to keep them in approximately original position, cauz i hate smacking my knuckles on the dash, if we just heat and bend, will it bend alright? cauz i dont know what type of metal they use and if it will bend alright with heat, but i will cut if necessary

wouldnt bother mukin around bendin shifters just choppy the floor to get enough room ...............

But then again i wouldnt do a body lift again on a patrol ive seen many now runnin tyre sizes that i runn with no dramas just choppy to fit keep em low :roll:

Meant cut a V shape out of the floor not the shifters. leave the shifters alone.

If you heat the shifters it's a good chance you'll wreck the rubber bush in them. I'd notch the floor.

You can heat the shifters with an oxy the bush only is affected if you have no idea on how to use an oxy.....the transfer is the only tricky one but I was a lazy fuck and left the lever on the car and heated it up and used a bar to bend it - somoked a bit but hey it was all done in about half an hour......cutting the floor pan is asking for trouble or don't you go in water???

Dave i just removed the bush all together. Just welded the thread back on the shifter. Always in water thats why i took the carpets out

mate just did his 2 inch body, no dramas just a wee bit of trimming.

don't body lift though. just cut. mine has 38.5's on 7 inch wizard with no scrubbing. guards are so cheap, when you want to sell just bolt on a newie - cheaper than blocks and bolts!

How much floor you think you need to remove? 4 foot??? You dont even cut away enough to go outside the stock rubber boot on the tunnel.. I cut the V in my floor, and have been over bonnet in Coopers creek more than once.

Dont be a rough bastard, leave the floor alone.
Transfer shifter can be bent easily if you are careful, dont even need to remove it. Get a mate to bend it as you heat the shaft with oxy/acet
and spray rubber and upper section of the lower selector with cold water from underneath the vehicle as u do it, this prevents the rubber bush from melting and u end up with enough clearance without the butchery!

theres a removable panel which resides around the shifter which allows removal of gerabox etc by crane.

Just trim the opening of the removal panel which allows the stick to protrude by 15mm or so to allow clearance.

Should you wish to return it to factory.. just go to a wrecker and source another one to put it on. But most people i know never go back on a body lift to standard - too much hassle.

I agree with Juzza, I bend the shifter as some need more than others :roll:

I take them out ( 2 bolts and 1 nut) then heat, bend and cool down ASAP. I take it a little at a time and can take 2 or 3 goes. I have seen some floors cut and there is no way they would ever seal again, dont hack the floor, just a little bend will do it.

It's pretty straight forward, it's more like a few cms than into the third row of seats :roll:

. Why is everyone so soft on making a cut on a pannel you never even see?

I have seen them needing up to 50mm requiring a bit of a bend and a bit of a cut. I think 50mm out of the floor is a bit much for the boot to re-cover.

You dont have to cut 50mm out of the floor, I didnt when I did mine... its just to the edge of the rubber, and doesnt leak..

And that would be the 1 you have done. We do lots and 99% need a small amount BUT I have had some that need up to 50mm. Its funny but most GQ's are different, being Body, chassis ect.

Yeah when we did mine we wrapped a rag soaked in water around the nylon ball and as Barry heated the shaft with the oxy I was spraying around the rag and rubber boot with one of those water spray bottles.
Lever was still bolted to t/case, took a few goes though to get it right.

I've assisted with 5 now, 3 shortys, and 2 LWB, you've done 100's woohoo.

I've never need to do more than the V, although one bloke went the bent shifters on his own idea.
