Post by Ruggers »

has anyone done a 1hz to a bj73 5speed i want the motor as theres more of them around than the 12ht. so is it a striaght swap or do i need different bellhousings and input shaft. im not worried about space or engine mounts positon. any info on doing this would be great.
also anyone want to buy recoed 3b with turbo pushing 12 pounds let me know if your interested

spline might be right but the bellhousing will be wrong. there are guys on the DTLC list who could answer this for you. or Dave Tay, I think he uses the nick 'beanz' on outerlimits, would have some good tech on that swap I think. the cheapest way to do it would be to sell the turbo'd 3b with the gearbox and buy a 1HZ from a HZJ75 with the gearbox on it.

Gday
The b input shaft was different to the f and h input, so u might have to buy a hj75 box from a 1990+ There are a few in the tradingpost this week alone.

Dont use the HZJ box as they are crap they changed the gear tooth form, material the gears are made and the heattreating/hardening process this leaves the gear with a very thin hardening which wears out heaps quicker than the old 2F,3F&2H boxes and transfers. To fit the 1HZ to the B box use a HZJ75 bellhousing and install a spacer of about 10-15mm thick between the gearbox and bellhousing. (can confirm dimension if required). You would need to change the clutch pilot bearing to one with a smaller internal dimension. HZJ has 15mm spigot B has a 12mm spigot on the input shaft. You would also need to play with the clutch release bearing as the nose cones on the boxes are different shape and different sizes.

thanks guys i dont want to get rid on my box as i have just had it rebuilt and low range t/case gears put and i doubt i would get my money back for it. So a 1hz bellhousing would bolt straight to my gearbox. also what about changing front input shafts and nose cone on the front fo the box tyo one of a 1hz box thanks chris

Here's a picture of the different input shafts.

The one on the bottom is from a 5 speed on a 3b, the other is is off . . . pretty much everything else (H, 2H, 12HT, F as far as I know).

As you can see its a finer spline and a bit longer.

I'm not very familiar with 1HZs but I reckon changing the input shafts gives you a more "stock" result (ie no clutch mods required/ no spacers means no changes to mounts either) - it is definately acheivable for the other plants I mentioned above but fair bit of work in its self.

Put a 6Cyl shaft in your box (not the 1HZ as the gears are different) and if you machine approx 10mm off the HZJ75 bellhousing you can bolt it up. Keep in mind that Toyota had 3 update on those 5 speed boxes and it was the inputshaft and bearing that changed.
