Rear spring options for Hilux

Post by ausyota »

I need a flexy rear :)
OK I have a SAS planned for the front but what are my rear options other than IFS rears (which I allready have).
My IFS rears at the moment in factory form have an allmost vertical shackle angle.
What I want ideally is something longer than an IFS rear so I can keep my rear shackle mounts where they are and just put in new front hangers.
I also want to move the rear diff foward an inch or 2 if posible caus the extra cab is a loooong WBase.
Needs to be easily engineered too as I will be going through all the shiat for the front.
Paul.

I`d say custom made springs, but their is probably a spring out there that you could use. Or just go to coils.

With my limited knowledge the only thing I can think of is put Ford Explorer springs in rear, think they are about 5 or 6 inches longer than the IFS ones.

I'm fairly certain the centre pin on these is 25.5 inches from front. (Your IFS ones are 23.5" I think).

So if you moved the front of your rear spring hanger forward 3 or 4 inches forward you would reduce your wheelbase by 2" and have a nice angle for the shackle.

And you would get a bit of lift as well.

Then use your IFS springs for your front SAS conversion.

I would not personally go custom springs cause you can't source them cheaply or quickly when they need replacing.

I had thought of maybe going custom.
But yeah would be a pain in the ass with no spares around.
Dont want to go coils at this stage. A bit too complex to get right (this is a daily driver).
Explorer springs sound like a posibility, can anyone confirm these dimensions?

customs way to go!! 63 inch on mine flat length eye to eye by 10 mm thick with 2 other leaves 10 mm thick staggered 2 inch in from each end front mount is 9 1/2 inches forward from standard center hole is 31 inches in from rear with 3 inch longer than standard shackles layed back at 45 degrees. The set(amount of arch) needed is the same as hilux + 5inches of lift which when settled gives about 3 inches with only the 3 leaves! thick enough not to need track bar and flexy as a nympho gymnast!!

only problem is with my sas on the front that has 2 inch dropped hangers and rears up front, the back sits about 1 1/2 inches lower so i need blocks..would of saved meself the trouble if front shackle went thru chassis instead of under it but hey it works and beats the pants off the old ifs
