FSJ restoration

FSJ restoration
Ok - the big Diesel is in, the 5 speed box is in and the Dana 44s are in - running smooth as silk.
She's been 'bodyworked' and now it's time for the fit out.
Gee FSJ parts are hard to come by at a reasonable price!!
I need door rubbers and window seals.
I need internal winder and door opener splines.
I need 1/4 vent hinges (probably complete frames).
I need a full set of front carpets and underlining.
I've got the front split speakers, crossover and amps in but where do I fit the sub? - poke it out the back wall under the tray?
This weekend's project is to fit the 120lt tank I scored - where the hell do I fit 120lt tank? - It'll be a squeeze...
You gotta love this hobbie - keeps me awake at night and poor...

Forget the front vent windows here in Oz. Get them in from O/S. The LHS is renowned for rusting out.
As for the tanks. Keep the 75 liter tank on the LHS and have a reserve 60 litre tank made for the (either - or) space between the chassis rails in the rear or between the body and chassis rail on the RHS.
Carpets come from your local upholstrer - nothing complex about them.
Great to see the diesel in there as it's way cheaper in fuel usage than the 360. Just don't expect to run bigger than 32's as the change to 4.11 ratios is expensive (front is really a 4.09 for the D44).
If you crunch either of the axles then the cheap alternative is to source old Patrol axles with the 4.11 ratios as stock. Wheel bolt pattern is same and track is same...FYI.

Thanks fellas - great info there.
Not sure I understand OzJeeper about the diff ratios but I'll cross that bridge when I come to it.
I no longer have the original tank - long gone.
I've managed to fit the tank between the chassis rails at the rear with the filler out the back.
Can't (illegal I think) weld the talk supports to the chassis so I didn't quite get it finished this weekend as I hoped, I have to weld some plates on the cross supports for the tank and bolt them to the chassis.
I plan to ad a water tank where the original fuel tank was.
At the moment the exhaust runs down the driver's side but I'm seriously thinking of adding mini stacks - wouldn't that be a hoot!
I started on the interior but - as I always seem to do - decided to take it one step further and removed the windscreen (was cracked anyway) and dash to tidy up the wiring, check for rust under the seal and get the dash painted.
I was surprised there was no rust.
Here's a short list of items I need if anyone has anything lying around.
Door internals - winder, glass rail, handles assembly.
1/4 vent frames and hinges for both sides.
Under dash heater / air con assembly - original or aftermarket ideas.
I hate being cold and I love air con.
Power steering assembly that will fit - will have to use the Toyota diesel pump and Jeep for the rest I think.
I've fitted new shocks but need a steering damper.
Once again - thanks for all your help and advice - will have to show someone that loves Jeeps and will appreciate a thing of beauty when it's finished!!

Try Jeeeep Recyclers in Hervey Bay for some of this stuff. Or maybe Hammonds in Capalba.
I have tried to source a 14/ vent for my FSJ for some time and they are not easy to get here. I suggest look at some of the USA sites to get these in.
To repeat. Your local auto upholsterer will be able to make up a set of carpets for way cheaper than trying to procure a set of OEM carpets.
Not sure what diff ratios you have in the Dana 44's, but if they are the origional ratios you will have trouble driving up hills and holding road speed with 35's fitted... They will be way too tall for the diesel...
regards...

Mascot Motors have 1/4 vent assemblies for $68.50 each and winder regulators for $55 each plus $20 postage.
Is that a fair price?
Ok on the diff ratios - I understand what you mean now but will cross that when I get there.
Upholsterers want the truck to make up carpets.
It is shedded while I'm doing it up so to get it to an apholsterer would require a flatbed or regestering which I'm not ready to do yet.
Is there an auto carpet manufacturer that has the moulded carpets for a FSJ - I've contacted 2 but both said they didn't have the mould.
I would have thought it would be the same aa a Cherokee.
Can you recommend some USA Jeep sites? - I have found one on Ebay that sells NOS.

Mascots will be having a run on 1/4 vents tomorrow
If the carpet thing is a problem (no there is no aftermarket carpet) have a go at doing it yourself. The transmission hump is not that tall and it could be a DIY effort. Cherokees are getting a bit old - like me Need another 3 years b4 the Chero gets to Vintage class!
Enjoy the truck...

I removed the dash on the weekend and took it to a powder coater yesterday.
They have quoted me $60 to sandblast and powder coat it in metalic gun metal grey - I thought that was very very cheap.
Removing the dash was less than 15 min work - mind you I also removed the windscreen - A new one will go in when I get the dash back middle of next week.

updates
I have the dash back - it's powder coated metalic gun metal grey - the pic doesn't do it justice - it looks great.
Total cost including sand blasting was $80.
I bought a set of Smiths guages off Ebay for $40 out of a XJ6 Jag to replace the originals - a bit of a nightmare making them work but it's all just about done.
I'll get some pics of it all together as soon as I find the battery charger for the camera.
